85 XLV Help

I recently purchased and 85 xlv 540. Starts great runs great for about 2 mins.at which time all it wants to do is idle. Let it sit for 5 or so mins(off) runs great again for a couple mins. I have cleaned carbs ,changed gas and plugs still the same.
Any help would be great

Thanks Jimbo

A few things to check would be, the pick up in the tank, the tank itself, fuel filter and the fuel pump?

After that you should check the crank seals. Sometimes when they go bad they do the same thing you're describing.

The compression is in the low 90 "s . Would this contribute to the problem?

It very well could. Compression should be at least 120psi. How many miles are on it?

Well its good to know i can expect to get that many miles out of my 85xlv. I have less than 2000 and the PSI is around 130 in each cylinder. It sounds like (to me) that your cylinders are worn out, and once it starts to warm up, they become out of round and you loose compression. I would get ahold of smallengineguy, he may shed more light onto it.
