Carb question

I volunteered to help my neighbor resurrect a 1980ish EX440D. It has been left neglected, uncovered in his back yard for the last 3 years. Being a Yamaha I had confidence that it would still run if it wasn't seized.

To make a long story short, it runs great if you pour gas down the throat of the carb. One pull and it runs until the prime is gone. (I used the 50:1 mix I have for my 3.3hp Merc dinghy motor)

The fuel pump is pumping so I think a carb rebuild should fix the problem. The choke is frozen although the cable is not. Does anyone know if the choke cable is attached to a piston that should pull out? I can't see any other way to remove the choke cable but am afraid to yank too hard without knowing for sure.

Thanks

the other problem

The reason my neighbor abandoned the sled was that the variable pulley on the engine failed and is wide open. Any advise on repairing that would be appreciated.

Yes, there is a plunger on that end of the choke cable. If it's seized in, try a little penetrating oil to free it up. If not, yank the cable out, then you may have to pry/drill out the plunger. Also sounds like the spring on the clutch broke.
