Excessive RPM 95 V-max 500

I was given a 500 V-max in good shape. I have other machines, so I wasn't to interested in finding out the porblem with the V-max. I am back yard mechanic. When driving the V-max local, it has lots of power, but very hard on gas. Recently I took, it on a 10 mile run, at 45mph my RPM's are at 8000. I am thinking it could be secondary clutch bushings, or someone changed front clutch spring. I would like to know, what spring it came with originaly. Or if a lighter spring, would improve gas millage. I am more worried about, popping pistons, then gas millage. Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers!!!
