Carbides for 1991 Yamaha Phazer II

Hi All. I am new to snowmobiling. I picked up a used Phazer with 1600 miles on it. Thing looks/runs like brand new. I took it out for a ride this morning (first snow) and it ran great. The only problem was slow speed turns. The skis both turned fine but the sled didn't want to go easily. I am thinking I need new carbides. What should I get? Single/dual channel? 4", 6", 8"? Can anyone reccomend a brand? Thanks much!

If you don't have much snow, then it will be hard to turn. more than a couple inches, and it's still not turning, then you might need carbides. you can look at them, make sure they are thick enough. a normal wear bar will be a thick weld when it's new, a carbide will look like a little blade. test it in good snow before you get new ones, and make sure they're actually worn. just lift the front of the ski up by the handle and look at them.

X2

Mine were worn nice and flat, so I just got some 3/8 round bar, cut the original on either end of the furthest bolts and bent the bar to fit and welded it to my old one... $10 worth of steel and half an hour and I was done. Did that about 1200 miles ago.. Still there..

That was on a 93 Phazer II ST

Check the misc parts section of this forum, then click on parts links for aftermarket distributors. If you have NO studs, go wit hthe 4". Up to 96 studs, 6".

You guys are awesome. Thank you all for the ideas. I think i'll wait until we get a decent snowfall and try it out again. Only 2-3" on the ground right now.
