SS 440 no top end power, governed?
I aquired an old SS 440, seems to run great, lots of power on take off but it feels like it is governed or something, Im sure it is not but it gets to a point where it is just cruzing along maybe 35 or 40 and not winding up, it just seems like it winds up and then just smooths out, darn, I didnt think to look at the tach, its there a high speed jet or something that could be clogged, it sat for about 3 years, but added gas as it was empty and it fired right up or is it that it just dosnt go that fast, I know my indy 440 and Artic cat 340 goes alot faster, Thanks

After cleaning out the carbs, check the clutches. I'll bet the secondary(driven) clutch is not shifting properly. I have seen and had this problem many times.

if its running high revs its clutch, if not its a carb/fuel issue.

I think it must be a fuel issue as today it was in and out, it would haul to a point, then no power, putt for a while and then goes again, lots of low end at first, almost like something is clogging the fuel system,it dosnt seem to be a bog, not the bla bla bla,its like you took off and then stuck a bag half way over the carb,it will run along fine just putting and getting on it once in a while, thru me off, man that hurt,am going to clean out the carb and put a new fuel filter and see what happens ,it has lots of power to start, Thanks

Perhaps a crazy thing but here is what I experienced. I bought a sled that had sat for a while. Squirrels had gotten at it and carried hickory nuts etc into the muffler and when I started the machine the muffler was not able to blow the junk out.If the exhaust is plugged or partly plugged, it will run fine up to a point, then depending how restricted it won,t run any faster.

I have a 440 SS as well. I had a similar problem. Take the choke apart in the carb. It is just a little piston that gets corroded from lack of use, and gets stuck. The cable still might move, but the spring might not be returning it to the correct postion. Thats what id did to me! It would run great, but just not have that top end power.
Clean it up with some light grit sand paper. I then put a thin layer of oil on it. Runs great!
