change the top sprocket in the chain case to 1 tooth larger and check that the clutches are clean and operating smoothly.

That engine was never known for very good gas milage. You arent the first person Ive heard of who has unhappy with the fuel economy of that sled.
One other thing to look at is the jets. Yamaha jetted those sleds pig rich from the factory. You could go down 1 jet size and probably pick up 1 or 2 mpg.
No matter what you do though, that engine is never going to be a fuel miser.

SnowRida has a Yami V-Max 600 twin.....seemed he was always buying more fuel than the rest of us. One time, he almost ran out until some nice damsel saved his ass!!

This is true. This gal stopped in her car while we were on the side of the road, and said to follow her to her place, and she gave me some gas to make it back to a gas station. I had her sent some flowers for the great help she provided.
I wouldn't brag about the gas milage on these sleds.

I thought my 700 was bad... Try taking out a plug and capping off the fuel line to one of your carbs lol

I learned a 700 RMK can do 60 MPH on one cylinder. This what when it was new, had a CDI box go bad (was a recall/service bulletin anyways).

I have the same sled and seem to get pretty good gas mileage.
Almost as good as my 87 Phazer.
I hope this does'nt start happening to mine.
Maybe your just gettin on that gas to hard.
