87 Excite

I have the year of our excite figured out, its an 87. However, it has 88 carbs on it. Does anyone know where a guy can get a carb rebuild kit? I have no idea what model the carb it beyond that it was made by mikuni. I have attached a picture of the carb. Hopefully it appears.

hey northern,
the 87 exciters came with the butterfly style mikuni that ran off one throttle cable onto a throttle body. they were actually better carbs than what they went to in 88. i believe they are 38mm mikunis. possible 40, 42's. you can measure them to find out, its the ID on the intake side. most guys switched out the 87 butterflys due to the fact that you couldnt adjust the air/fuel mixture screw and get a few more hp's. but they were a solid carb. ive actually switched out for the butterflys in the past because they twin slide carbs were known to shake alot during operation which naturally leaned out the fuel and blew up alot of motors. some ppl were putting magnets under the float bowls to add some weight to the carbs to reduce this problem. just make sure you bolt them up tight to your intake boots and your airbox. as far as rebuilding your carbs...just blow out all the jets and passageways, and pull out the main jets and get 2 new ones with the same number on them. clean the floats bowls out and replace your fuel lines. i guess the only thing you may need is the float bowl gaskets, but they are usually reuseable. your local yamaha deal will be able to order any jets...but you can check online with denniskirk.com, if you need other things.
