89 Exciter 570

Hey everyone. I'm new to the site. I picked up a 89 Exciter last year. Ran fine no problems. This year was running fine. Shut it off once then the next time it didnt want to start. It flooded itself out. Let it sit then it started. Now I try to start it and it wont even bark. Just wandering if anyone has any ideas or suggestions. Ive never owned a Yamaha before, but I really like this one. Also if anyone know what the carb settings should be. The sled never idled right. I counted the turns for the idle screw by turning it in and it was out like 7 turns, i turned it back to where it was. Any ideas??

Have you changed plugs yet? New gas? Cleaned the carbs? I may be mistaken but I think that the idle screw is the equal of holding a little pressure on the throttle.

Thanks for a reply mmrosshere.
Yes, It was fresh gas this year and the plugs I just put in this year too. Have not cleaned the carbs yet, was going to try to get to them this weekend. Just looking for some info before I waste time on things that may have nothing to do with it. Does anyone know the basic idle and air screw seetings to start with, then i can clean the carbs and set them and start from scratch. Also read posts about TORS, would they be any part in this or does my sled not have them. Anything would be of help.

Air screw is usualy 1.5 turns out for starters. Getting at those carbs is going to be a pain!!! I just sold the exII I had and on it I cut that shroud off at both side and pop rivited an ell bracket on so that the 2 bolts that hold the side covers up would hold it too. Way easyer to remove the air box and carbs. Cleaning the carbs should be done every year! And go through the gas lines too! The only other weak point I know of is the chain! I jetted mine down one size and geared up one tooth and she would do 100!

I haven't got the air box of yet. Tried new plugs, barks once then thats it. has lots of spark on both. Both cylinders fill up with gas right away and the plugs are soaked. I dont know anything about yamahas, this is my first one I have owned. Just dont understand how runs one day and next smells like its running rich and then nothing. Don't know what to do with it. Anymore suggestions are welcome.

Sounds as though the carb may have some crud in it and perhaps the Enrichner (choke) is hanging up. One time it runs great the next time it floods it's self out. It could also be as super said the float is hanging up. both would be taken care of with a cleaning.

I had a similar problem with mine this year. 93 exciter 2 sx. Same engine as you. One - i'd throw some gas line de-icer in there. two - Full choke full throttle if it's flooded. get it going and go for a good ride. ten min or so. Try to get it opened up as much as possible. I'm sure it will benefit from a carb cleaning but a good ride w/help too. Pull your plugs after the ride they should be light brown in colour. If they're dark and wet you're too rich. Good luck. and congrats of the sled! I love mine. We just need some snow!!!
Out.

Finally got the snow here. Just havent got the sled going yet, need some time off work!!! Anyone have any suggestions to the "easiest" if there is one to getting the air box off with the least amount of stress. I read one post on a site that you have to take the steering shaft apart??? Don't want to, but will if there is no other ways.
Thanks

have you tried lifting the back in the air so the tracks off the ground.
Put gas in each cylendar. full choke- give her a pull-feather the gas to keep her going. this just happened to me. It worked. Once I had it running steady I dropped a bottle of gas line antifreeze in it
good luck.

Ok for exctier all the main problems id see would be...
Broken CDI
TORS
and get rid of airbox.. get pods so much easier.
and yea float or jets or something.

AND OMG WAT R U DOING to get the airbox off, undo those 2 tie things that use screws to tighten. theres 4 on the carbs. 2 holding the carbs to the jugs or boost bottle, and 2 holding the airbox. undo the 2 airbox ones. take off the bolts on the airbox. take it out. then buy some pods, st ick the pods on there. and if ur COIL is on the airbox. make a metal plate for it, and weld the plate to the frame somewhere. like up by the CDI or something. thats what i did.

joarb 1. its a good idea to get rid of the airbox...i agree with vmax...you can pop out the 2 hose clamps that keep it on, then you gotta really reef on the bastard to get it out...almost seems like youre gonna break something off everytime...but they do come out and they do back in...but it takes time..but you dont need them...all they do is circulate warm air back into the carbs to keep them from freezing up. but exciters come with liquid cooled carbs, so it shouldnt matter...if there still hooked up that is...i would disconnect the tors system...you can check other posts from last year, but i think you jsut disconnect both from the main plug, then wire them up together, and that disconnects them....also, with my 88, i pulled out those decompression sensors that thread into the cylinders above the intake boots...they sometimes lose there seals and leak too much air into the motor which could blow yoru motor....unthread them and replace them with 2 bolts with the same thread...just cut the bolts to the proper length and thread them in with some red locktite...if you have spark, your coil is good, and if it was running your cdi should be good as well...just check all your plugs are tight and together up near the rad fill cap...when the airbox is out youll have a better view of your fuel lines that run under it. its a pain but you could pull out the fuel pump and make sure the diaphragm is not ripped...but if your plugs are soaked then its gettin fuel. good luck...exciter 570's are awesome sleds. plus you can bore them to .50 over and make them almost 600's.

I had an Exciter that would be a bugger to start if it sat for a week or so. I would have to pull the plugs out, heat them up real good with a butane torch, stick em back in quick, hold the throttle wide open and four or five pulls later she'd light. Ran awesome once it got going but what a pain in th butt.

I am in the midst of the same project, except with an 87 excite w/ 88 carbs. The airbox is a pain to remove. I pulled the cover that is right above the airbox, and then tooks the screws out of the airbox and took it out in halves. There is, I'm sure an easier way. I am also cleaning the carbs. I have found the floats didn't slide easily. I am also replacing all the fuel and oil lines/filters. Hopefully someone posts a good starting point for the carbs.

After you soak the carbs and blow out the passages, spray a film of WD-40 onto the slide before reassembly.
