Vmax 500 running rich???
I have a 96 Vmax 500 w/ 5700 miles. It runs great, especially on nice trails where you can cruise at steady speeds; has great power up to about 75-80 mph; and seems to average about 13 mpg on good trails. However, on small woods trails at low rpms, it really seems to load up and sputter a bit until I get to a place where I can get on the gas and clean it out. It hasn't fouled a plug yet, but it's a little annoying. Is it just a quirk of these machines, or is it running too rich. FYI, I put on 182 miles on Friday and used about a quart and a half of oil, to give you an idea of my oil consumption. Thanks for any help!

You can adjust the needle in the carb slides to lessen the bog a bit, or turn your air bleed screw to adjust it also. Turn it out a quarter turn, see if that helps.

Thanks, I'll try that. Does that oil consumption seem right?

Does it idle OK? or load up?
As for oil 182 miles divided by 13MPG is 14 gallons? 14 X4 is56 qts divided by 1.5 is 37.7 to 1. That should be closer to 50 to 1 so you should have only used just over a quart?
That is if my math is right.
Try turning out the air screw fill the gas and oil and run it til you need to add a quart the see how many gallons you use (12.5 is 50-1)!

Thanks...it idles good, maybe a tad higher than the specs listed on the under side of the hood, which says about 1800 rpms, and it idles about 2000. I'll try the air screw, which should help both the idle and low rpm stutter.

If it seems to you that its using alot of oil, check the adjuster on the oil cable and make sure the little boots aren't holding the cable out

I would much rather use too much oil than not enough.

If idle is ok, then I would run at 1/2 throtle for a good long run then check the plugs and see how wet they are?Like SEG said you can raise the E clip to lean the mid range! Andif my math was right you could shorten the oiler a turn?

I adjusted the oiler so the lines on at WOT match up...seems to be a little better, it doesn't smoke as bad. Where is the air bleed screw on this model. I saw a screw on top of the carbs that has a spring. I turned it a 1/4 turn to the left, and the idle went down to 1500, which upon looking at the tag was right in the range where I needed to be, but it seemed a little rough at mid throttle, so I turned it back up an 1/8 turn and was better and the idle was still in range. Did I do the right thing?

SEG said to turn out the air bleed screw to adjust it, is there one on each carb? I saw a large headed screw on top of the rack that seemed to set the idle up and down, but looking at a microfiche of the carb, the air adj. screw was on the side. The only thing I see on the side is a screw right where the hoses come in from the air box on each carb, and it is kind of sunk into the carb with a flat head. If this is it, than I could see why it's running rich, one is 1/2 turn tighter than the other. Also, on the oil pump adjuster, the lines only need to line up at WOT, correct? Thanks!

Sounds like youre on it! But watch your plugs after a 1/2 throtle run and CHECK YOUR OIL! I'd hate for you to lock it up!

Thanks. Just an FYI, I talked to my local dealer, stock settings on the air bleed is 1 1/8 turns out from lightly seated, in case anyone else reads this that has the same issue.
