Question 1978 440 exciter

I need some help with an electrical issue. The sled runs very well. I am only getting (almost) 8 volts to lights(all lights). I am looking to find my voltage regulater without much success.(I would like to check it first) Is it internal near the stater or what. Symtem is; the lights dim and pulsate under power. Is there hope for this or should it just be a daylight sled.

Your VR is a metal box with one wire going to it. I have several of them mounted to the foot rack behind the clutch.

Yea it's mounted on the foot rest under the secondary clutch... it's in the open and easy to change but hard to see because it's under the foot rest. I looked forever for mine and started to doubt if the sled actually had one... then felt like a numbnut when I finaly found it.
