Thoughts on the 1988 Exciter

I'm new to snow mobiling. Well, that is to say I've never owned one. I've been plenty of times with my uncle who mostly rides Polaris sleds. I asked him about yamaha's and he doesn't know much. I have the chance to pick up a 1988 exciter 570 for $400. Just want to know if they are good sleds. What are the problems? Can I mod the sled to fit a longer track or a 2" track instead of the stock 1 3/8" track? When I go with my uncle I ride a 1996 Polaris XLT. Just want to know how that might compair because it has a 136" track. Let me know! Thanks!!

Grab it for that price, they are awsome older sleds. The only way to fit a 2in paddle is to remove and bypass the front heat exchanger and to drop from the 8tooth to 7 tooth drivers. That is not optimal because you can ratchet the drivers being smaller and it gives a bad aproach angle. The best thing to do other than spending 700 to roll the chaincase, just run a 1.5, if you want to run 1.75 and keep a good aproach angle then remove and bypass front heat exchanger. They are a good durable sled. Some would bog from powder ingestion in deep powder but you just need to close the hood slot when you are in powder. If you put a 136 1.5 or 1.75 on you will be able to keep up with that xlt. I ride with a guy with an 87 exciter with 136 1.5 and a guy with an xlt600, that exciter can out do that xlt every time, but keep in mind that the rider is the big difference.

I just sold my 89 ex II. They are very dependable sleds and if that one is all there and runs good it is well worth 5-600 or more! The only issues I know of are the chain case and getting at the carbs. Open up the case and really check the chain and sprokets real good or replace them. the other
what I did was cut the plastic around the cowling and pop riveted an angle braket in to bolt to the side cover bolt, then the entire piece over the air box will come right off and the air box too. Rejetting or cleanning is easy!
