180 HP V-Max?????
Is this possible? While trying to dig up a Phazer motor I ran across a 1992 V-max which claimed 180 HP and topspeed of around 110 mph. It had the quad exhaust which just made me smile when I heard it. Apparently the owner has $15K invested, but I just had to ask if this is possible... They are asking $2,500USD for it, and it crossed my mind... But I'd probably kill myself....

Hello
I have a 94 Vmax 600 long track. The machine is stock with no mods. It will do close to 100 mph, and it isn't even close to 180hp. I bet it is not more than about 85hp.
If the guy is trying to tell you it has 180hp and only does 110 mph. I would call BS.

I think he is talking about a v-max 4. There good sleds, but I don't know how reliable they are after modded. It always sounds good till it blows up,don't knock stock. 180 hp shouldn't be all that difficult to get out of one of these sleds (crank HP).

It is a V-Max 4. But if a stock one will do 100 then why spend the money? It sounded pissed... I'm not so impressed by HP. I just want a good all mountain sled. I was playing in the powder today on my 1987 Indy Sport. Granted we have a good base, but talking to these guys about sleds they make it sound like if I leave the trail I will get stuck. Now I'm no pro sledder but I've done my time on several different machines. Telling me I need a 1000cc motor and a 2" 155 track to leave the trail is just dumb. Thats like saying I need a diesel pickup two haul to sleds.... I don't want "bling" I just want a great sled.... Any tips?

You are 100% correct. You don't need to spend $20,000 + to have fun in the snow.
My 94 Vmax 136" track does great in the powder.
Most of the people that spend big bucks on machines, don't use half the potential the machine has to offer. Bottom line just an expensive conversation piece.
I like the 600 twin. Only two pistons to replace. The less parts to replace the better.
If you ride trails, or ditch bang you don't need a sled that does 120mph.
Buy an older sled, you won't feel so bad when you smash it up.

I don't want to go 120.... I just want the track to go 120 if I get in a sticky spot.... I have a feeling it will tear up a lot of parts that I don't feel the need to replace every trip.

Very easy to get 200+ hp out of a VMax4. It's essentially a 4 cylinder 2 stroke. There's a small car engine under there! And YES, stock VMax4's did anywhere from 105-115 mph on the radar, and these sleds may have very well been the fastest STOCK sleds ever built. However, I wouldn't pay any more than 2000 for it. Bottom line is....it's still a 16 year old sled.

It was an impressive engine.. I found out that it was on consignment. So who know how much spread they are trying to get out of it.

If you are looking for a sled to play in the powder I would look elsewhere. That sled is a heavy old pig. It doesn't matter how much power or how fast it goes, weight kills in the deep stuff. I would look for a used 600 twin. If you do trail riding as well as deep powder look for a 136" skid. The old SKS Polaris' were way ahead of their time. You can always add a 1 1/2 inch lug track and away you go! Besides a good running 600 will go 100mph anyways and will be way better on fuel!

a guy here raced a vmax4, he got around 180 if not more outa it, it was a 1/4 drag sled, i dont know what was done but nothing could even come close to touching it, would only hold it wide open less then 3/4 of the way and then let it cruise, this was at runway park in sault ste marie few yrs ago. i wouldnt take it on the trails, reliability is probly a couple miles lol

Oh, and just some pointless information. I used to have a video of STOCK drag racing in....I believe Sweden, and a 95 VMax4 Blew the doors off a 2005 Polaris Switchback 900. The Switchback hit 102 mph, and the VMax hit 107 Mph. Both sleds were bone Stock.
the VMax finished 2nd place. Arctic Cat Thundercat 1000 came first at 112 Mph.

Vmax
Honestly those specs are no problem for those old quads. I rode and wrote off one many moons ago (dealer demo) and it did go like hell (in it's day it was amazing), but if it's something you want to ride anywere other than across the lake you might wanna steer away from it.
Here's one - This past weekend I was fortunate enough to demo an Apex Mountain c/w Turbo, 260 hp (pump gas) and 162 inches of track. HOLY $HIT is all you need to say to describe this badboy - actually the $$$ is enough - $14,000 + $9000 for the extras installed - this badboy hauls like nothin' you've ever seen !!! Launch is redefined.
One thing no one will tell you is how friggin hard it is to get parts for these things once they're 10 years old. I can call up my polaris dealer and get parts for a TXL in a heartbeat and anything from a Doo dealer for my Everest in a couple of days - The Yammy is a hunt, peck, scratch,
Mcguiver, beg, borrow and steal ordeal.
I own a Vmax 600 (which I bought - heck I nearly stole it - honestly by the time the dust settled I was 200 bucks on the plus side), It's a super reliable sled but stock and aftermarket parts are a friggin pain - It seems like the Lada/Yugo of snowmobiles. Plus side it always runs (sometimes cold it can be a workout to start 'til it gets a wiff of gas), bad side is the low center of gravity, low bars and again the parts ordeal. My recommendation dig up a deal on an older XLT/RMK or a Doo.

I believe stock they were about 168! Pipes alone would put it above 180!! If you have never seen a Vmax 4 got to the web site or look at the second page of the thread Ovation from awhile back!! ( By the way the Ovation is really ROCKEN!)

you can get 180 hp out of a vmax4. 1992 was about 135 hp stock. i've owned one myself. they don't handle or ride very good but just an awesome machine when put in the right tuners hands. others are right in saying they are still setting records with those beast.
