Sticky throttle

I am a newbie, bought my first sled this summer I have an 88 Exciter. On the weekend took the GF out for a ride and had the misfortune of my throttle sticking on at a high speed, luckily I managed to keep it under control and nurse it home with riding the brakes

When I checked under the hood I found the top had come unscrewed from the carb and the spring and cable were hanging out.....upon rescrewing, it had still continued to stick after restarting.

Is it the cable perhaps a bur or guck on it making it stick or more in the carb area....maybe the slide? Will a WD-40 lube fix it or is something more complex?

What do you guys think I should do? Take it to a shop or try to fix myself? Any suggestions will help thx.

Did you make sure the slide was seated all the way down in the body of the carb? If you did not get the groove lined up with the pin, it will not idle down as the slide is still open too far.

No I didn't pay close attention to what I was dealing with as I didn't want to really spend much time on it then with my Girlfriend right there so after a few trials I just ended up parking it....I plan on looking at it int he next couple days and I will unscrew the threads and check the slide and spring seating closer this time......could it be something as simple as that?
Could it be that the return spring is shot?
Thanks for the help.

Most likely the spring is OK.
Check the listing from the previous post.

You might also check that needle is down all the way in slide. Under the spring is a cover that holds needle down. I have seen these cocked and needle 1/2 up. You might also pull airbox off and watch inside carb when you insert slide. You will see if needle goes into jet proper and also if slide goes all the way down.
