i was looking at buying a new sled and saw a guy had one of these for sale was wondering if it was a sled with a lot of problems or were good reliable sleds. thax
1997's had a few problems, but were overall pretty good.
The rivets that hold the trailing arm bracket have a tendancy to loosen up in that year, make sure to grab the trailing arms and try to move them around. It isn't that bad of a fix, normally just drill the rivets out and install bolts, but it can take a fair amount of effort if the tunnel has been worn.
The Red Head 700 is arguably the most reliable two stroke motor ever put into a snowmobile, but I believe the PTO crank bearing was a little weak, and was updated in subsequent years of the 700 redhead.
Just dont overpay for it. Yamaha440 pretty much nailed it and most likely if its a survivor all the updates should have been done.
In addition, take a close look at the skid and see if the updated bump stops were added to the top of the rails, make sure the front w-arm isnt broken, and dont be afraid to ask if the driveshaft was ever replaced.
I dont say these things to scare you away, just some additional issues that need checked. Alot has to to with care and riding style, but I wouldnt be the least bit afraid to pop for a good clean 97.
