What's up everyone! Name is Rich and I'm here to hopefully learn about this sport as much as possible. I just bought my first snowmobile. It's a 2004 Yamaha RX-1 ER. I live in northern Illinois by Rockford and am looking forward to the snow!!

Wow, that is a really cool looking sled! I don't have any oil recommendations, so I will leave someone else to that. For every single one of my machines and vehicles I just buy the cheapest Walmart oil. I look at Yamaha parts house all the time for their parts diagrams but I have never bought from them. In my opinion they are way overpriced, so if you can find the part on eBay or somewhere else for cheaper, I would go for it. Yamaha parts house also kind of rips you off on shipping. That's just my opinion though. I am the kind of guy to search for an hour for the best product for the best price instead of just spending 5 minutes to find a good product and paying more for it.

I am an oem kind of guy on the 4 strokes and your local yamaha dealer will have a boxed oil change kit that has all you need to do the service at a fair price. Where else you going to find the filter?

I totally agree with VmaxSteve, the onlines lure you in with cheaper pricing, but once you add the shipping, you just went backwards, not to mention the wait for your parts to arrive.

Since your new to the whole snowmobiling experience, you may get ahead of the game by becoming a regular at your local dealer. Some, but not all, can/will be a wealth of info if needed. And, you may find them useful on occasion.

I would go so far as becoming a regular at your local Dealer may get you any inside info on what to watch for on your sled as well.
Just take a few min on a week day morning(if you can), take a box of day old donuts, and just go talk to the Yamaha mech and pick his brain about your sled!
Ask whats the best way to get to? oil filter? drain plug? What ever you got!

I spent some time at my local Cat dealer last year. It's a smaller shop and happened to be there when others weren't I was able to get a ton of information. They were really helpful. It's run by two brothers who've been in business since the 70's. They had some great NOS parts I needed and the mechanic brother had some good mechanical advice for my 1996 machines.

Thanks everyone for the help/advise!! I will definitely shop around for everything. Already found some guy parting out some sleds and was able to pickup a few things for dirt cheap. Now I'm looking for carbides. Had doolies on it but they are so worn down it's not even funny. Don't know how the guy before me rode it. I'm going to try to make it to a Yamaha dealer here tomorrow or the next day to get all my oil and a few other things.
