not compared to my sled, well at least a '97 vmax is slow. my uncles dynoed at 105 and i have never lost to him in a race, he has better suspension though. if he knew how to ride he could easily stomp me in the twisties. it's no slouch, i'm just faster.

My dad had a 96 and holy hell did that thing fly. He had a small lug track on it and when I got to the lakes it would do over 100 speedo like nothing.

being new to snowmobiles, I don't know the model year changes, but my 98 VMAX 600 hauls ass! it gets a tiny bit sideways after the 3rd "shift." 99.9% bone stock (that I know of anyway) - just the missing windshield and bent handlebar mods.

I realize this post is a little old but I'll add my $0.02, anyway. The Yamaha 500 and 600 twins are not known for making a lot of HP or being fast in their class. The twins are known for being hard on fuel though. The triples on the other hand are very nice motors.

I speak from experience as I currently own a Twin, a Triple, and a Quad Yamaha.

I good running (properly clutched) quad will walk all over a 600, it's not even a contest. Approximate hp for an 800 is 140-150.

When PROPERLY CLUTCHED these are still fast in the 800 class.

Check out vmax4.com for info on the Vmax-4's.

The 92-94 are 750's.

The 95-97 are 800's.

The 97 has long travel Proaction rear suspension. It has a better ride but it's a bit slower than the other 800's.

Don't under estimate a 750 either, they are fast but the clutching sucks really bad. The secondary clutch is the biggest problem. You either need to know clutching to get them running properly or replace the secondary. I currently run a 750 with raised cylinders, gearing and some clutching. I'm not going to start naming sleds but I have beat many newer 800's at the drags.
