Excessive slide wear?
Anybody else with a Apex having trouble keeping slides on besides my dad and I and a few others we know from our area? My dad went up north this weekend and put on 525 miles again on new slides and burnt them off. We loosened the track some and it obviously didn't help. These machines can't keep any snow underneath which causes our slides to get hot and burn off. Different slides most likely won't work either. Yamaha says we are riding in too little snow,but there is always snow that we are on and still gets hot? It seems almost like we can't ride these things anywhere. What's going to happen if we get some really cold air and the trails get really hard packed? They will burn off! Just wondering what other people are seeing,we each have about 1,300 miles on now and two sets of slides that we have gone through. Almost making our Polaris's look good now,at least the rear suspension part of it. Wondering if we need longer snow flaps on to keep snow under it?

When I put a new track on my yammy, i always had trouble with the slides wearing out, but this year since the track is now stretched out and broken in, im still on the same pair of slides. So if you give the track time to break in, i think less pressure will be put on the slides.

30 mm of space between the bottom of the hyfax to the track with a 20 pound pull on the center of the track,break your sliders in like brake pads in heat cycles this should help alot.Also where is all the wear happening on the hyfax middle,front,back?.

Middle to back mainly! How are you supposed to break them in in heat cycles when you are in a group of guys who just want to ride,like me? When will it be good enough,[the wear patern?]

Thats odd that the wear is middle to back check your track tension and (set it to the specification in your owners manual).Usually Yamahas have most of the wear at the front of the hyfax,take it easy on them for the first 100 km don't overheat them too much with excessive speed.Once they break in they should be good to go.I put 3000km on my original set of hyfax before I made the change.Make sure they get plenty of lube in the first 100 km,what I like to do is take my feet off the sled and put them along side the front of the skid while the sled is in motion(low speed) and direct the snow right to the hyfax assuring them of cooling.

Our dealer is putting some "scratchers" on,like they do on the Mtn. sleds,off the skis I believe to get some snow up in the rear chassis because it's always bare. Dad and I aren't new to snowmobiling at all,just new to Yamaha's. We are thinking there may be a design problem on the rear of the Apex's because we aren't the only ones having troubles with slides and wheels warpping and rubber peeling off. Beginning to believe these Yamaha's are a bit "fragile" compared to our Polaris's as far as the rear suspension goes. We can only hope it get's better because we love these sleds,fits us to a tee.
