Question Help With My Exciter

I had the very good fortune of getting a snowmobile for Christmas this year from, believe it or not, my new father-in-law to be. The reason I am writing this thread is to find out all I can about the sled. I haven't ridden it or even seen it yet, there has been very little snow this year and my work schedule hasn't really given me the time to go pick it up. I don't even know for sure what year it is, mid 90' I believe. I was just hoping to get some ideas on what kind of sled the Exciter is, fast, moderate, slow. Poor or good quality, what kind of problems I might expect, engine size, etc. I have never had the good fortune of owning a snowmobile before now and am really looking forward to the new experiences ahead.

Thanks

You've inherited a very good machine for a first time rider, a one hell'va lot better than probably alot of us started on years ago. Just be careful when you first start out, because if its setup properly,(jetting, clutching, etc) it may be just a little bit more than you're really prepared to handle at this point. Take your time and really get the feel of the machine, what it can or cannot do, what your capablities and limitations are!

If its a mid 90's, it's an Exciter II version (manufactured bewteen 1991 and 1993) and Yamaha made carburetor changes on these later models, which were less than desirable and caused more than a few people lean burndown problems because of improperly jetted carbs and lean conditions. All the Exciters came equiped with a 570 cc motor and depending on year the HP varied somewhat. In 1993, the Exciter II SX was the high HP version (93 HP) and it really smoked along the trails. This is not to say the earlier versions were not quick or fast, they all were very decent machines, it's just the 93's were awesome in there day!

The suspensions on the Exciters left something to be desired because they only had about 5" of travel and you had to be careful on the paddle size if you wanted to change tracks because of the coolant runners which were run in the tunnel. Alot of the parts were interchangeable between the various years, except for the gear cases, where they changed the splines on the jackshaft, etc. I personally really like the machine, I've got two of them and presently working on buying two more. They are easy to work on and if set up properly, they will last a long time and provide you with many years of enjoyment!
