Not Running Right

My brother has a 79 excel V 540. It was rebuilt last year and ran fine at the beggining of this year. It started to idle high for a couple of days and then it ran like crap. The engine sputtered and backfired. So I took the carb off to clean it and found a piece of string stuck in the butterfly, keeping it open. I put the carb back on but it still ran like crap. I noticed the right cylinder is not getting fuel and the right side spark plug is burnt very badly. I'm so pissed off that I just gave up on it. If anyone has any ideas of what it could be I would greatly appreciate it. Sorry for the article. Thank you.

Check and see if the fuel pump is working properly. Pull the gas line off and pull er over to see if fuel is coming out. As far as the plug goes, sounds like you have a jetting problem.

What do you mean the spark plug is burnt badly? It sounds like between that and the fact it ran lean before that, it burnt a piston on that side. Do a compression test and let us know what it is.
