Oil change sucks!

Changing oil on the Apex sucks! You have to tear apart the WHOLE front of the sled to get the oil filter out,not easy! I don't know that I like the panel system they have for these things, just as nice flipping up a hood. All I know is that this machine isn't too consumer friendly, changing plugs looks to be a chore,if not next to impossible on the trail. I know they say you should never have to change them, but you know you will out in the middle of nowhere when it's 10 degrees or colder,so then you have to take all the panels off too,but still struggle to get to the plugs. Why can't somebody just make a sled that's easy to work on again! I don't want to spend $100-$200 on a oil change! I'm very dissatisfied with Yamaha on this, but I love the sled otherwise.

Wow, I never gave that any thought. Must be one of the down sides of a 4 stroke?

12 hour flat rate on removal of rx 1 motors, and if its flat rate it must take longer than that.

You don't have to change it often. Once after the break in period then you get a lot of life out of the oil just like in your car and changes will be prety far apart even if you ride a lot. But yes, what a pain in the arse for just an oil change.

You don't have to remove the motor, just a lot of parts mainly. It took the dealers mechanics about 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 hrs to do. Now I'm good for the season though. It's only once a year intervals after this season that it has to be changed. Still very nice not having to bring oil along on trips or even buy it! I guess I have just been spoiled with the 2 strokes all these years and now have to deal with oil changes.

I would like to learn the pro's and con's of the 4 strokes. I'm thinking it could be my next sled. Anything you can pass along would be great.

I guess I'm still new with the 4 stroke thing, but I like the fact that I don't need to haul extra oil along with me on trips, they have a broader power band I think than the 2 strokes and they just run nice. The cons I guess are just dealing with oil changes, but if that's the only problem then I can deal with it. Overall I'd say it's just a great sled for touring and you can still play with them effectively.

few more cons, no smell, and dont seem as peppy. not saying theyre slow, but not as peppy.

of course cc for cc, they are slower, but they seem to do well in the classes they are put in. anyone with a new nytro do a comparison to 600's? im not anti-4stroke (i like my tt-r, want a nytro), but i like 2 strokes more so far.

hey how heavy do they seem, when riding and when you have to lift/move them? also, with no pullstart, what happens if the battery dies? jump it?

Youmust not have riddin a new Yamaha yet because they are very peppy I think, you may get a jump on our 4 strokers, but I think we can catch up pretty easy. As far as weight, you can move them around just like anything else, they're not too bad. Ridding them isn't all too bad, they are no REV by any means, but do hold there own. As far as a pullstart,do you worry about your car or truck? There are cables to jump them though.

of course i do! thats why i added a crank 9on the front

i figured they wouldnt be too heavy. we had to lift an older one up and it didnt seem too bad but we had a lot of people. good to hear they run good though, ill have to get on one. its given a 2 stroke of the same class will beat it off the line, but it sounds like yamaha came as close as they will with solving that.

my brother is almost as anti-four stroke as he his anti ann arbor. my dad is a little more excepting, but will still buy a 2 stroke first. i'd buy one (if i had the money) if it performed as well so i guess im neutral i really like what ive heard about the nytro, i'd like to get on it this year

Reply to skidoo_magoo asking. anyone with a new nytro do a comparison to 600's?

I have a Nytro and my buddy has a 04 ski-doo 600 HO SDI and we raced. They were neck and neck the whole time. I think if we could have went longer he would of got me top end but i've had mine go 105 so i dont know what his top end is. But then i studded mine with 96 studs and got him the whole race. So its on the same league with 600.

WRONG, most flat rates are just an average amount of time, set as one rate. Many sled shops could probably have it out in 10-11 hrs no problems, maybe less... but they'll still charge for 12 hrs.

oil change

All machines have evolved into their own little complexities, Why is it that if someone says it is hard to do, than it is, woking on all sorts of mechanical projects in my life(for over 40 years) doesn't produce a problem but only a challange to over come. Look and evaluate the situation over and you may find the oil change is not all that tough. It probably took longer to master a nintendo game, but we didn't complain about that,
