Now I have the gist of what your talking about! I would not forsee a problem with what your doing, but I know a guy that has four Exciters, an 87, 88, 89, and 90 I believe and he has been doing work on several of them and the tracks are different as far as bogey wheel placement and such.
As far as other differences I'll just list a few things that I am aware of:
1. Carb changes, 87 Exciters originally came with butterfly carbs like the Phazers, but were recalled and they installed 38 Mukuni round slide power jet carbs up to, I believe 1990.
2. In 1991 they stayed with the Mukuni Carb, but non power jet system and in 93 on the Exciter SX models they went with Flatside carbs, better cylinder porting and were making in the vincinity of 93 HP.
Anyway, this gentleman I know who has all these different Exciters can be contacted through his Ebay Store under the name of Ridgeview Performance Motorsports. Tell him Dave Hall sent you for information, and by the way he has alot of parts for various machines and will make you a darn good deal for whatever your looking for! If you have trouble contacting him let me know, I've got his personal email address and I'll drop him a line if need be!
Almost forgot, in regard to the chain cases, the early models ran the same gear cases as the Phazers, which were a triple roller gear and chain, 13 tooth sprockets. On the later Exciters the Jackshafts were changed and were 15 tooth sprockets, so do not let anyway tell you everything was the same on all years. Some changes were very subtle and others more dramatic and you did not figure this out until you got into working on them!
