Setting the timing on an old Polaris engine

Can anyone give me a reliable method for setting the timing on a '77 Polaris Electra fan cooled 440?

After having rebuilt the whole sled, the last thing I want to do is seize my engine up.

You need a dial indicator to stick into the spark plug hole to tell you when TDC is, then adjust the points to open a few degrees before that.

If you don't have a dial indicator you can use a screwdriver and mark it at top dead center then retard the engine untill it is about 12 degrees before tdc. lock the stator plate and set the points at 18 thousands.
