79 Exciter 440 Track Problem

Is there a way to adjust the tracks on these machines? it seems loose and the track itself is shifted to the right side. There are quite a few track clips missing from the right side as well, can this be contributing to the shift issue? Any info would be great.

Yes, adjusting bolts behind the rear guide wheels. The heads face toward the front of the machine. The old machine had a tool kit that came with it with the wrench to adjust the track, but a deep 14 mm socket for the jam nut and a 12 mm socket for the adjusting bolt should do.

Next, rev it a little bit, and check for alignment. Yamaha uses the spec of 1.5" of deflection with a 22 lbs pound weight on it, although I find that too tight. I keep mine at 1.5" with a 10 lbs weight fine, and never had it ratchet.

Well, my 14mm Deep well wasnt long enough to get to the Jam nuts, i had to completely back the whole bolt out of the skid and loosen the jam nuts backwards and then put them back in and re-adjust them. The track is an even 1/2 inch on each side of the idler wheels with about 2' deflection at 22Lbs Tension. The Jam nut tightened down perfect on the Right side but the Jam nut wont tighten down all the way on the Left side. Is there any way to tighten that Jam nut down to keep the bolt from Adnvancing the skid or Backing out? Can i buy an extended 14mm Deep socket or what are my options? Thanks

If the socket isn't deep enough, a deeper one could work, or you find the original tool set for the sled, and use the included tool. There is a SLIGHT possibility that you could remove the rear guide wheel and use a box/open ended wrench to tighten it, but due to the tension it may be impossible to remove or re-install the rear guide wheel.
