1977 john Deere cyclone 440

Got a family owned machine back after 25 years.
quick inspection I saw fan housing partially falling off. Tight but not aligned with side of motor.
Can not even use pull starter with it like this. I was able to see a few bolts missing but need a diagram as to where the bolts are and what size.
I would include pics but not sure how....

pulled motor out and removed huge mice nests inside fan housing. smelled horrible. cleaned it all up and removed the 1 broken bolt in recoil. cleaned all other threads. cover was only held on by 1 bolt and either factory or long time since any bolts were in the other holes.
Thank you for the links...

It lives!

got motor back together and back in. and started after 4 pulls. very hard to pull and I think the gas oil mix is way too rich, smokes like crazy. Took alot of pulls today and its only 28F. Maybe a carb adj is in order after new gas.
Seems too lean even with the smoke. I know its been bored but not sure if it was jetted properly. gotta find the jet size and compare it to stock.

later.........

nice. at least you got yours started! did you put an ounce or two of oil in the cylinders? might help with the pull start being hard?

When I took the motor out and set it on garage floor, it kinda rolled over on the exhaust side and gas poured out of crankcase. Someone dumped alot of gas oil in to attempt to start it with the recoil broken?
weird hey?

Either that or the gas filled the case through the fuel pump pulse line.

Updates on sled

haven't been on here in a while but have many updates.
Lost spark after a while, well had weaker spark. Turnes out stator was bad. Put another one in and sparks way better then before. Now a pull or 2 is all it takes regardless how cold it is. Been going on JDsleds.com alot lately. Big help to me for these sleds.
Runs great now and even got to ride alittle but snow is going away as we speak.
Here are some new pics:
