chaparral snowmobile

I have recently found a chaparral snowmobile that has been sitting for about ten years. It is a 440 snowmobile. The snowmobile is complete except for the skis. Do skis from other snowmobiles fit? If so, what all models will fit? Any idea on what a good price would be to pay for it? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

What year is it? I'm sure other skis will fit, you can pretty much improvise when it comes to skis. My friend couldn't find skis for his 89 mach 1 and ended up modding a pair of 05 mx z skis for it.

Ok, I haven't found many Chaparral parts out there. Also were chaparral and rupp the same? What would be a value for it the way it sits?

Here are some pics, not the best but a start.

had a chaparral a few years ago. pretty good sled not to heavy. you can intechange skis. Just match up the ends. I wouldn't give more than $200 for the pictured sled.

It's hard to say what it's really worth, they aren't very common sleds. It would be nice to hold on to and restore.

No, Chaparral and Rupp are not the same. Chaparral was in business from 1968 to 1974. They used a wide variety of engine models in their sleds from suppliers such as Hirth, Kohler, Sachs, JLO, CCW and some badged as their own, but if I remember correctly they were made for them by CCW. All clutchs were Salsbury except in 1973 when they made their own. The sled in the picture looks ok on the outside, but looks pretty much like a basket case mechanically. I wouldn't pay more than $100 for it.

That said, a friend of mine had 1969 Chaparral when I was young and my 66 Olympique look like it was standing still compared to it.

I was told by the guy that the plugs were still in it, and now that I looked at the one pic the one isn't in it. The guy wants $50, but since water would have gotten in the motor it seems like that's more work then I would want to take on. I figure finding parts is going to be a major pain in the @$$.

No, I wouldn't take it for free to fix it in that case. The bearings alone would set you back more than what people are willing to pay.

Ya I have decided to wait for another summer project. I hope there are 2 that a friend of a friend has. He hasn't decided if he wants to sell them yet though.

If you could get it for free, I would just get it running and deal with it as is.
Run it till is blows and throw another motor into it.

I don't think the guy is willing to give it away for free. Even if he would where would you be able to find another motor? Or do you mean a different brand of motor. Also, would you know what ski's would work on it?

Well, I would try to free up the engine and make it run till it blew and replace it with another. You can find those exact engines for around $100 or less.
There are some uni-fit skis available online.

Thanks RJ I will look for some parts before I talk to the guy though. Also, where could you find those engines at?

I would take it. It's in rough shape, but for that price it just depends on how much space you have in the garage!

I think RJ has the right idea. Get it going, run it as long as you can without putting money in it, then see what you want to do with it.

So JD8345RT you think it's a good deal for $50? I have the garage space, me and a friend of mine like fixing up older sleds. We haven't fixed one up that's this old, but there's always a time to start. Also, what's it worth all fixed up? To me it doesn't look to be in too bad of shape besides the motor being open to the elements. I can't tell if there is a carb on it from that one pic either.

I think it's worth $50. Even if it's beyond help and it came to parting it out, you'd still get your money back. If you have the space and the time, go for it! In running/driveable condition, it's worth $200-400, in restored condition, it'd be worth more like $500-1000. It would take a lot of work to find enough parts to restore a Chaparrel though, and you wouldn't get much return on it, so unless you are willing to put a lot of money into it, I wouldn't recommend restoring it. It could be easy to get running, but I wouldn't count on it. I would still say get it!

If you zoom in on the picture the right (when you're sitting on it) plug is still in.

The other isn't though. That's where the water problem would be.
