Home made clutch pulling.

I bought a spare motor that came with a Comet 102 C clutch on it.

I have never pulled a primary clutch before, but was aware that they make special tools for doing this. I didn't have one so I decided to fabricate one. I took a long bolt that fit inside the threads on the end of the crank. I had to grind the head slightly to get it to fit into the clutch. I then got a bolt that fit the threads on the clutch(in this case 3/4" fine thread) Put the bolt long bolt inside the clutch and then tightened the big bolt. Clutch popped off.

This seemed to work fine and appears that I can fabricate others, for different clutches/cranks, by just getting the correct size bolts for the units I am working on.

Bolts are a lot cheaper than the special tools.

Any reason not to do this?

Thanks, Joel

I have a bunch of old (and one newer sled) sleds with different clutches on them and will need several different pullers so saving money is also a consideration, but for me, it was as much a matter of wanting to get it done right away as it was of being cheap

I pulled 3 more clutches today with some additional tools that I made.

2 were old Arctic Cat "Hex Clutches" These took a fine thread bolt, I think 5/8" (but did not measure it, could have been fine 9/16") They both took the same threaded bolt size, but required a different lenth bolt shank under them, I assume due to different crank. One was El Tigre Spirit FA motor and the other was a Kawasaki 440. The Spirit Motor took a longer bolt shank.

And an old Arctic Cat Clutch that had a very similar shape to the Hex Clutch, but no Hex. It took a 7/8" coarse thread bolt.

With appropriate length/diameter bolt shanks under them, they all worked great and the clutches popped right off.
