1973 Moto-Ski F340 no spark on one cylinder

Hello,

Anyone know why this sled has no spark on one side (the magneto side)?

I was told to clean points first... are they under the mag? Would this be my first step to find the problem? This is my first moto-ski and am learning the mechanicals of this sled, please excuse my lack of knowledge with points equipped sleds!

Thanks, Kevin

Dual coil right? What i did on mine is trim down/replace spark plug wire. Then if that dont work try swapping the coils, too c if it switches sides witch would tell u if the coil is bad and do all this with the plugs out and the plug boots off. c if it spark if not then its ether a bad connection from points too coil or the points. And then when u get that workin get new plugs and ngk plug caps. motoski/skidoo patato pototo same thing! just a different hood and stickers!

Yes, replaced spark plug caps, still no spark...

Danbroke-- Yes, swapped coils, both are okay. To get to the points, does the fan belt, magneto come off, and points are behind that?

yes u need too take the pull start off then there will be 3 bolts holding on the pully for the belt. And after taking the pully off u should c 3 slots in the flywheel. In one of those openings there should be a lever for the advance. u should be able too move that but when u aline that slot with one of the points that set of points should be open. Make sure both open and close. Too remove the flywheel take that 30mm nut off and with a flywheel puller and heat! it will come off but its goin too take a lot too remove it. I couldnt find the right points for my 77 moto ski nuvik so u just filed them. Too set timming. U need too advance the timming i used a washer and one of the alan bolts in the flywheel too hold the advance cam. then install the flywheel back on. then i left the plugs out and with a timming lightand a car battary timed it. There should be 2 notches in the flywheel for each cylinder firing and a mark on the case that line up together. Plus i used a corded drill and socket on that big flywheel nut and turned over the engine that way lot easier too turn it. then when u get each cyclinder too aline the marks take the flywheel back off and take the washer out. Put bolt back in, then flywheel and vice versa.

Son of a *****!!! I filed the points, did not mess with taking the flywheel off yet, pulled the rope for a spark, now no spark from either side!!! Do you think I contaminated the points with the file board? Can I clean the points if they are dirty? Thanks again!!

well check and c that they open and close when u crank it over by hand if they do next would be too take the flywheel off. If they dont adjust the points. If u move the points too much one way they will stay open and too much the other and they stay closed they have too close and open too make a spark " moving the points will affect timing" so check the timing with the timing light! If it still dont work take they flywheel off and remove the points and make sure there are no burnt spots on the points. I would order new points and condencers so u only have too do this job once! And dont get them from dennis kirk they are the wrong ones. Trust me wrong ones even thou they look so close dont work and will make u blow a cork! LOL! But as of what u told me kinda sounds like they might not be opening and closing right. Hang in there u will get it right it took me a week! most of that was fighting with the wrong new points. And if i remember right the top point controls the mag side and the bottom does the clutch side

and dont move the point/condenser plate! Its held on by 2 alan bolts! Dont mess with that! Unless u mark where it is so it goes right back where it is.

Usually the problem is that the condenser has failed when there is no spark on one side.
With the age of the engine, it is a good idea to replace both of them and the points as well.

Danbroke--

Yea, I have a torch set for heat... Why get longer bolts? To use w/ the harmonic balance puller? Are the bolts in the puller kit not the right size?

Thanks!
