I thought that as well but the problem is that around here, not too many carbs are to be had. Plus, I'm going to have enough time and money on the rest of the sled. The 1st run it actually seemed to run fine so I'll stick with this carb until I actually get to ride it. If it has problems then I'll look into something else.

Got another question on the speedo. I noticed the miles are abnormally low so I decided to check it out. Found that the piece that bolts to the track seems bad. When I pulled it out there looks like some wire that is rusted into a cone shape where it goes into this piece. Is there a way to fix this? I was thinking of filing a lip on that and making a bushing to go inside. It seems the end that comes out of the tunnel is OK because if I move the track I can see it move slightly. The cable is good too.

I hope I described this good enough. I can try to get pictures if needed.

Yep, that's the speedo adapter pin. You can buy new ones.
They usually run about $2.50.

A dental pick works good for those and the new ones are available almost anywhere that sells sled parts.

Well, just have it that when tearing down the sled I found a dental pick inside! The one he gave me is about 2" long and I can't believe mine is the same way. It seems like a real PITA but we'll see how it works out.

Boy the above post doesn't really make sense! I did find a dental pick but ended up breaking it messing around with this pin. I did get a new pin for free at my local shop. I got the one half out but can't get all the pieces out of the other. I guess a few days soaking in PB Blaster will have to work.

*UPDATE* Well, it's been slow working on the sled mainly because I've been busy with work and the family. I've got about 80% of the old pin out for the speedo. The last little bit that's left in there is being a real pain. I gave my seat to my wife's uncle to see if he can work some magic on since he's got what it takes to redo things like this. Unfortunately he said the whole thing is pretty rotten. So, if any of you know where there is a decent seat cover and foam pass it onto me.

On a good note I did get all the bad rivits replaced and along with that a little more cleaning. Got the carb rebuilt and all new lines ran so we'll see how it'll run soon. Also got the pipe and muffler cleaned and recoated too so things are looking a little better. My dad had stopped by yesterday for me to work on his truck and happened to see the sled. He just shook his head and made a comment how high scrap is going these days

Try attaching a strong magnet to the pick too.

Yep, I did that too. I got what I could and was able to get the pin in there. Not sure if it'll last or not. Got an email back from a guy on Ebay that states he's got about 40 Scorpions that he's parting out and he said he's got a few very good looking seats. Might just do that but I hate parting $100 just for a used seat. But the sled is starting to take shape again. I got the dash cleaned and fixed a few minor problems it had. It's just waiting for me to finish it and paint it.

Well, got her back together enough to get it running again. It really back fired something fierce. I was able to get to do a few grass runs though. It was the first time I actually got it to move under it's own power. Boy does that make me feel better! I think a fresh set of plugs will help so it's off to the shop to get some. The ones in there seem to be 2 different ones. Anyone have a recomended plug for this sled? Today I redid the recoil with some new rope. The old pull had to be the emergency pull because it was real small and the rope was short. Having rope a decent length sure helps things out a bit!!!

I still have plenty of work to do yet. I need to get the handle bar back together, dash back together, clear the hood, apply new graphics, find a few missing parts, redo seat, and clean a little more. Not sure if I should come up with a new retro style graphic kit or just redo the old ones. I mean, it's not going to be all that original anyways because I doing the hood in base/clear.

That will be the same plug as the other one that you built.
The original plug that it came with was Bosch W260T2.
Could also be Champion N3, which would be also a NGK B8HS.

Well, got new plugs installed and I can't get the darn thing to fire up. I can get a sputter every now and again even if I heat up the new plugs. Not sure what the deal is going on. I spoke again to the guy that I got it from and he said there's a problem with the internal seal between the cylinders which makes it hard to start and run. Is this true? I got it to fire up OK last time but it wanted to backfire a lot when giving it gas. I just thought that was from the old plugs or even the old carb. I discovered another rig'n that really ticked me off. Someone had the pulley for the fan off and had all kinds of washes in it. I also ended up breaking a fin off which has really ticked me off. I'm now thinking of possibly giving up on this one if I can't easily or cheaply get these bugs worked out. RJ, any ideas here?

Yep, a bad center seal would do that.
The seal can be replaced with an aftermarket one (two piece) fairly easily.
The fan can be replaced with a used one, or just make sure that it is balanced by breaking off another blade on the opposite side.
The washers were probably an attempt to make the wrong fan belt fit.

Well, next question is how to get to that seal and where to look for a new one that'll fit?

The crank case will have to be split.
This is a complete tear down of the engine and as long as you have it apart, replace the end seals as well.

You can get the seal kits from Dennis Kirk or any other online store.

Shoot. I was afraid of that. How do I know what sort of center seal to get? I asked the local shop and they said there's nothing out there anymore for my sled. I can get top end parts but no bottom seals and such. Also, what tools are needed to get this sucker apart? I'm gonna try to run it without the muffler first then take it from there. I also heard of a 440 Sting locally so I may just cut my losses and go get another one.

The replacement center seal is now a two piece so that the crank does not need to be pressed apart.
If you anc not find the part listed for Cayuna engines, try looking under JLO. I believe that the parts are interchangeable.

OK. I'm going to play around with this and see if it's actually bad or something else.
