1972 arctic cat panther 340 HELP PLEASE!

have a 72 arctic cat panther 340 kaw and been fighting with it for 5 yrs to get it right i need to get it going again,been a pain been stored for 30 yrs and has less than 500 miles on it, perfect cond. jugs still cross-hatched eng rebuilt no air or fuel leaks good comp replaced the carb with an HD thought i solved it but its still not right idles and runs for 15 min and then bogs, backfires. tried 2 sets of new coils, timing dead on new plugs. whats up? been working on sleds forever never been stumped b4

let me just add that all the fuel lines,check valves,filters are new,used several new plugs b8 ngk,sprayed starting fluid all over when it was acting up and rpms didn't change, bought carb rebuilt but i have rebuilt it 3 times each time soaking it in carb cleaner and blew out passages not hard its an HD. only thing suspicious was during one of my many eng removals i saw gas running out of the pulse line but symptoms are not of rich but lean cond backfire and coughing out of carb but as i said no air leaks

sorry to go on so much but part of it is me venting and also just being extremely frustrated. i'm a mechanic so i just figured all the 411 can only help solve it. wanted to add that also when it would start acting up the carb screws could be turned with very very little or no change in mix

points and condensors are new i do realize that sometimes you get bad condensors though i've gotten a few myself but my experience has been that they wont run right at all with a bad cond its got strong spark i guess i cant completely rule that out though its a cheap stupid fix. i just spent 200 on a used 400 cc kaw and fixed it up and put it in hopefully it works when i try to ride this winter.nickle and dime!its done it to me b4 went thru the 340 and went to ride it and it dogged me ran great on the bench

I'd pull it apart and replace all the crank seals including the center one considering it was stored for that long.

i did that about 4 years ago. my dad actually broke the clutch trying to get it off so i had to buy a new one. everything on that thing either electrical or gasket/seals are all new as of a few years ago. thats what killed me cuz i've rebuilt hundreds of small engines and that one only has given me any trouble. i heard from a local old time sled guy that the 72s were notorious for having bad stator plates but it kinda doesn't make sense cuz everything attached to it is new

Did you replace all the lines back to the tank?
Check the pickup screen too.

i replaced both lines twice and have checked the pickup screen several times but it was always clean. the fuel always runs down and continues to without leaking or getting air bubbles and the tank is extremely clean so nothing to plug the carb and i have 2 filters on it one on the carb and one inline.

When you rebuilt the carb, did you do the basic kit or the full rebuild?

1st time it was a full rebuild, watched the guy do it i paid 60$for it and he is in his 80s and been doing it for 40 yrs. all new needle,seat and diaphragms the mixture screws are ok. the other 2 times were a basic rebuild just the diaphragms and filter. it did the same thing with the old walbro carb so i didn't think it was suspect even though it was missing the leaf and valves/springs. nobody sells em'so i bought a carb.

T1A Kawasaki had faulty center seal. They upgraded in 73 to a mechanical seal (still available at Shadetree for around 18 bucks). The T1B 340 was supposed to have the upgrade but I have seen where some did not. Your sled sure sounds like the center seal is bad and should be upgraded to the new style. (mechanical not rubber.)

i got it going with that 400 kawi from a 73 but i still think it has something to do with with the magneto cuz the lights worked weird with the 340 but work perfect with the 400. also the center seal is new already and that wouldn't explain why it acts up after like 15 minutes of running. would it be worth fixing it to sell it i mean is a 36 yr old 340 kawi worth anything? its only got maybe 500 miles on it and i think thats why the engine was prob messed up from the factory and it just sat around for yrs
