I'm new to the snowmobile world... so I will admit that I am completely stuck on stupid. My parents got me a 78 Spitfire.. MINT CONDITION and it runs PERFECT! Only problem I'm having is the right ski, where the post comes up into the bottom of the sled into some kind of bar... the side of that bar seems to be broken off and the ski slants outward. Can anybody help me identify what this "BAR" is called or if it's even replaceable?? Thank you all so very much in advance.
Okay... so through much sifting... digging and research.. I discovered what I'm after is something called a Spindle Mount.. or a Spindle Mount Repair Kit? If anybody has ANY ideas of where I can find this.. PLEASE let me know.. I've been sitting here for countless hours scouring the internet trying to find these parts... Thank you so very much!!
Does the ski still turn with the bars?
Does it just lean kinda funny?
If it doesn't lean or turn it could just be a tie rod end?
See if you can get a pic?
I can try to get a pic posted later today, but it does still steer fine. It's where the spindle comes up into the sled itself. I can't tell if the long bar it attaches to is part of the actual BODY of the sled, or if it's something that can be replaced... but with the side missing, when you turn left, it allows that right ski, even though it too is turned, to swing outward. I have no idea how long it has been like this, and I had thought it was riding a little strange but thought it was just because it was old... like I said.. I'm new to snowmobiling.. and kind of stuck on stupid.. LOL.. I will try to get a pic posted so you can see what I'm talking about. Thank you for getting back to me.. it really is appreciated!
OK Justas I was afraid of!
Here is what you have to do.
Take the bolt off the top of each spindle. (cross the top in the pics)
With the front end in the air drop both the skis and spindles out of the sled.
Then next to where it is broken you see that 'Nut' coming up threw threw cross bar, remove it!
See if you can remove that cross bar?
Look at the other side and you will see what and or how to fix it.
Probably allum and you may have to take it in to have it welded?
There is supposed to be a brass bushing in there?
I tried to find someone with a microfiche with no luck!
I looked at this further to find that it looks to be permanatly attached by another piece to the sled... Ughghghgh. Thank you for getting back to me... I will have to work more on this when or if it finally gets warmer outside.. I don't have any kind of enclosure to bring it in to where it's warm enough to take this apart.
Once you have it apart you should see what needs to be done?
With a milk crate under the belly pan and both spindles removed, look at the good side for a brass bushing!
You may be able to rebuild the bad side and replace the better side bushing as well?
