Well there's a lot you can do. Remember HP means more money. And depends on your driving style . What a quick trail sled cost you about $ 1,200 or $600. If you want a open lake racer . About $1,500 first change out that boat anchor of a skid. Clutching , gearing , some VFORCE reeds or double stage Bosysen reeds. Do you exhaust ports. Buy a Dremel it works great for that . Pipe it . Bring some more air into the air box. To lighting up the skid will help a lot and plastic ski's. There's more. I had two1979 El Tigre . Thats the cheap cost effective way for more HP . If you want to everything stock looking and cut weight and add power I did that too. A lot of cutting out stuff . And for power balls to the wall case porting , blue print it, shave heads 20 to 30,000 off. Put big bore kit in it, widen exhaust ports , clean up casting , angle plugs , port timing, new pipes , good pic track , racing slides , change out bogie wheels, bore out carbs . And the list can go on.
I had a 79 6000.
The 80/81 when they went to a true 500cc instead of the 440 of 79, was faster.
Does your 79 have the rubber track or the 2/3rds cleated track?
I understood that the 79 was all rubber?
But someone at one time said they could go either way?
But this has been an age old question, how to make it faster? Trust me when I say I am a full fledge member of the more money than brains club!
You need to set yourself a goal, and a price limit!
It is real easy to get carried away with this!
But Yes there are several little things to do.
Bearings and slides!
Clutch center to centers! And belt!
I advise ski skins too.
