1972 Yamaha SL292 questions

hey Sledders,
I have a cabin up north in Michigan (a true UP'er wouldnt say its up north - ok, its by silver lake). I wanted to get an older sled that still ran just to leave up there to put around on. I found a guy not far from there with a bunch of old sleds for sale so I bought a 1972 Yamaha SL292 that he showed me would pull start and run. He even threw in anoth identical one with all the parts that he said should run but he never started it. Anyway, I brought it back, fired it up, and drove it around a little. A few things I noticed bug me and wondered if any of you had advice to help me to get it to run a little better. First off, it starts and idles great, no problems there. If its warm and I hammer on it, it bogs and will die, if I feather it it will go fine but when it picks up speed it bogs bad(like the choke were on) but the only way to get it to go again is to flip the choke closed for a second. Its like that the whole time. Any ideas? Also, this thing is oil injected and I know that these are prone to failure after time. Can I just remove the oil tank, snip and plug the oil line and then pre-mix the fuel? When it was first started it smoked like a typical 2-stroke but since then it doesnt smoke AT ALL! Lastly, this thing doesnt turn at all! There are no carbides or rails on the bottom of the ski's nor do I see any way that there ever were, am I wrong? ok, sorry for the long post, just curious to see if anyone out there can help me out.

thanks - Lawrence

You can block off the oiler if you want to. It sounds like the carb needs a rebuild. Buy a kit for it and rebuild it.

There should be skegs on the skis. You may have to take the skis off to check and replace them.

Choke Problem

You might want to check that the shoke plunger is all the way down and seated when the choke is off. Otherwise if it is no, it will be like the choke is on all the time.

Well, an update. I spent the weekend at the cabin and gassed up the old sled with pre-mix and just rode the heck out of it. It must have just been sitting for some time because it runs great now, as good as a 72 yamaha sl292 single can run I suppose! I had a good time zipping around the roads and countryside on this thing, perfect kind if sled to just let sit all year until the snow comes down. I did make sure the choke was functioning correctly and it was, thanks for the help!
