Looks cool!
I was going to give that a try on my AC. Wasn't sure it would work, but I went and bought the LED lamps anyway, about a month ago. I think the reason you have hot-spots in your pictures is because you're using directional LEDs. I bought the inverted cone LEDs. They diffuse light to the sides, rather than shooting it straight forward. I haven't put them in yet (sleds are still all covered up in the garage). I'm curious to see if the inverted cone get rid of the hot-spots. I will let you know how I make out.

Well, I just had to give it a try this weekend. I uncovered my 440, and tried my LED lamps in it.
The directional LEDs I had (dome-top) produced hot-spots, like in the pictures above. The inverted cone LEDs were MINT!!!! No hot-spots, and plenty of light - even during the day, and I was using RED ones!
My new "blue spark" inverted cone LEDs are on order... can't wait to get them installed!

I got mine on eBay... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWN%3AIT
Just make sure you get "inverted" cone LEDs. The top of the LED is concave, not rounded over like a normal LED. The rounded LEDs will produce hot-spots, like the pictures that were posted here. It's real bright near the LED, but the edges away from the LED are hardly readable.
On the other hand, the concave face of the inverted LED throws light out the sides, rather than projecting it straight ahead. It lights unifomly all the way around the instrument face. If you look at the pic of the LED (lit) in the eBay listing, you can clearly see the shape of the cone. You'll also notice that it throws almost no light forward.
I'll take some pictures later this week and post them. All I have right now are red LEDs. I originally bought them for the ID bar on my trailer. That's the only light left on my trailer that hasn't been upgraded to an LED version. I was going to just swap out the peanut bulbs for LEDs - that was before I learned the unit was permanently sealed.
Anyway, give me some time... and I'll get pictures.

Okay. Next question because its cold and I don't feel like going out to the shed and finding the snowmobile.
Would the same size LED as you bought fit my 02 Mountain Cat?

A peanut bulb is a peanut bulb. My 1980 Jag takes the same bulb. Heck, I'll bet $100 out of dano's wallet that it will fit your 02 perfectly!

Most definately.... I'm not entirely sure I can go in the event that I have an interview, but I doubt I will have any by early January. It sounds like a plan.

Fair enough. I'd like to see the picture of yours... then I'll have to invest in some green LEDs.

Here's one of the inverted cone LED. I had to shrink these quite a bit to get them under the 500x500 limit. The original pics are clear and easy to read all the way around the dial. Red is the worst color (heaviest filtered) LED too. Blue or green will be much brighter. Can't wait till my lamps arrive...

Here's one (a little blurry) of the "normal" front-firing LED.
Hee hee, great excuse to fire up the sled. My wife is complaining that I smell like smoke. Yeah.....
You can clearly see the hot-spot at the top, where the lamp is located.

What was the number of the bulb you removed to put these in. I'd like to get some for the 'Doo, I assume they're kinda the same...

Standard 12v peanut bulb... 194, I think. Same wedge-base lamp many cars take in turn signals, etc..
