Wanted: 2 well-kept 2000 or newer snowmobiles - Snowmobile Forum: Your #1 Snowmobile Forum

I am looking for 2 sleds for my wife and I that are clean, in good shape, and well-kept (maintenance wise). They don't have to be matching sleds, but I would like them to be the same brand (easier to maintain in my mind).

We are not new to snowmobiling but since we do a lot of trail, river, and lake riding in Northern WI, I would think any engine size between 400 and 600cc would be ideal. Reverse is a must especially when tree-dodging. Studded tracks and fresh carbides would be VERY nice as climbing the hillsides of Lake Superior gets a little tricky without them. Any sleds with less than 2500 miles will be considered, anything more and they should be show-room clean.

Ski-doo's are preferable, so are Yamaha's or Polaris's. I'd like to stay away from Artic Cat's please but it's merely personal preference (sorry AC fans).

If I could find 2 sleds and a trailer for around $5000 (depending on all above details, year of sleds, and mileage, and trailer condition, etc.) that would be sweet!

I would be willing to travel anywhere between Madison, WI & the Twin Cities along I-94 or between Eau Claire, WI and Superior/Duluth along Hwy 53.

Does anybody think I'm off-base here? I mean 2 sleds and a triler for $5k. Do you think it'll happen with the details I'm looking for?

I'm not really sure what to be looking for, but so far it looks like the MXZ 500's are the way to go as they're pretty nice and reliable ... I've also seen the Yamaha SRX's but they're a bit larger (700, engine size-wise).

Speaking of reliable, the MXZ 500 Fan's seem to be a great little sled ... when trail riding (slow, in between trees, climbing hills, etc) has anyone had a problem with airflow and keeping engine temp in check? My money might be able to go a bit farther with a fam cooled sled.

What other recomendation can people make?

I don't think that's unreasonable at all, but you would probably end up with just a 2 place open trailer.The prices of sleds will start climbing after September, so the quicker you can find a deal, the better! Tried eBay?

Yes, I've been scouring eBay ... lots really nice sleds far away. A few are nearby. I've also got a post on Craigslist and I'm rewriting that post for DooTalk.

It looks like I'm honing in on the MXZ 440's or 500's. While the liquid cooled MXZ's are probably more common, the fan cooled sleds seem almost bomb-proof the way forum members talk about them. Plus they are a few bones less. With my price range, I think I'm in the 2000 or 2001 year range.

I don't remember if I asked this question elsewhere in the forum, but what do you guys think about fan cooled sleds in slow, tight trail conditions? Any problems with overheating?

So far all ive owned have been fan cooled and have had no problems at all. You shouldnt have any problems finding what your looking for.

You'll have less problems with fans than liquids. Remember, you can run a fan cooled sled NOW if you jet the carb correctly. Plus they are about 100lbs lighter.

As long as the fan is turning and there is no junk in the air passage, the F/C sleds do just fine. Just check at the beginning of the season that no critters have built a nest in the engine shroud.

Yes and no ... it all depends on what you have as I'm always interested in a good deal. Plus the snow sucks this year in Wisconsin so I did not pick up any sleds yet. Send some pics and tech specs please.
