YOU SURE IT IS COMING FROM THE CHAINCASE, COULD BE BAD JACKSHAFT BEARING OR DRIVE AXLE BEARING. EITHER WILL TRANSMIT THE NOISE THROUGH THE SHAFTS INTO THE CHAINCASE

GOOD LUCK!

Just a warning to you- I bought my 500 XC SP new in 2001. After about 400 miles I had to take it in because the chain wasn't adjusted correctly right from the dealer! I was happy because they fixed everything under warranty, but I didn't know until just recently when I replaced the chain oil that they never replaced the chain case cover. It doesn't affect anything, but it is all chewed up.
