Michigan UP Snow Conditions

My buddies and I are debating whether to head out to the Upper Peninsula next week for some riding. Just want to know if anybody has been to the UP yet this year, and what the trail conditions / snow fall levels look like.

Thanks

UP not so good.

I havn't been to the UP yet, but a couple of my friends from Minneapolis went up there last weekend. I guess they said that the trails were pretty rough, but there was "some" snow. They stayed up in Bergland. One of them just bought a new Polaris Pro-X and he was just dying to ride it. I would say hold off for another week or two, but apparently you can ride there right now.

I know up here in Duluth, MN there really is no snow to speak of at the moment.

hehe, im your man indyxlt. I live in Newberry, which is about an hour north west of the bridge. Me and a friend of mine took a ride Thursday night out to his camp north of town, and the trails are great. The only problem we ran into was a water hole just north of town (due to beavers). Theres plenty of snow up towards Lake Superior (about 2 feet). I don't know about now, but when we went out Thursday the trails were excellent the farther north we got. Right now there has to be 500 sleds in town, and more are comin in every night, so i dont know how the trails will hold up. If we get some snow, which we are supposed to be getting, you'll be fine.

Hey Strokez,

Thanks for the info and the link. It is quite a bit longer drive for me to the Newberry area. Do you know of any links like that that are updated in the Bergland area? (About 30 mins East of Iron River / Wisconsin Border)?

We should setup an area of the forum that has links to sites like that with regularly updated trail info.

Like a foot of fresh snow, but now there's even more on top of that foot. The trails are in really good condition. Rode for a good 4 hours on Saturday. Forcast is up to 8 more inches by Monday. How are the trails there?

One of my friends (FRNTFLP) is up in the UP right now. Sounds like he had good riding.

As soon as I get my Zr fixed up again... needs new parts and some welding... I will have to try get up there.

Right now... in Duluth, Minnesota we have about 2" accumulation of snow.... so there is NO SNOW to speak of. It sucks really.

If you are goin out this weekend, you won't see me, unless later than 11 at night, because riding during the day around here on the weekend is almost like going out and trying to kill yourself because there are so many sleds

lol, I know what ya mean about the daytime riding. Over Christmas I was up in Maine and did a little riding there. The trails were packed! Hell, even here in the Sault, on Saturday and Sunday there were just tons of sleds out there, but there was a race at the casino too. But it is still fun nonetheless. I'll probably be out towards Newberry on Wednesday, and that area. Happy trails!

Friday (1/10) drove up to Eagle Harbor (from Minneapolis), via a fish fry in Eagle River. Returned monday (1/13) via Bergland, Manitowish Waters and then down to Hwy 8 and back to MSP.

As of monday, NO SNOW south of Manitowish Waters. Trails there were groomed but couldn't have had more than and inch of snow. Any use of the trails and they will be to te dirt.

Slightly more snow, but minimal up to the south end of Lake Gogebic. Ice is apparently in good shape as many are riding the lake. By Bergland, all is groomed, decent snow cover and I suspect decent riding.

From Rockland/Mass City area up to Houghton was better yet. Nothing like normal for this time of year, but definately rideable, and trails looked to be in good to very good condition.

North of Houghton has less snow on the ground. On the northwest side (Eagle Harbor, Eagle River, etc.) most snow blew away before it could be packed or groomed. Most trails gravel and dirt. On the Lac La Belle and Gay side, snow is decent. Trails fair to good depending on where based on wind and snow cover.

Best riding is between Bergland and Hougton. If you don't mind "snirt" then south to the WI/MI line or north of Hougton.
According to local weather, temps are to stay with "hi's" in the teens and lows just above zero for the next week. Apparently just perfect for lake effect. These areas are seeing between 2" and 4" per day.

All of the above based on riding north of Hougton and driving/looking on the way home from there on down.

How much riding did you get in? It doesn't sound like there is a lot of great snow in the UP quite yet. I overheard a conversation at the dealership in Duluth today that the UP is supposed to get 14" in areas over the next 2 days.

Things are definitely improving, but I am suprised there is still so little snow. Well it beats the zero we have here.

We've got like 14 or more inches, all but an inch or 2 over the wekend, we've got more, but it's settling, so it's not as deep as it was. Oh this weekend was great. I was downstate over the holidays and when I got back up it started coming down. One night, I think Sunday, you couldn't see anything! I went out toward Brimley when it let up a little, and the trails were drifted and I ran along the tracks playing in the drifts, what a time. It started to get bad as I got back home. Riding's great! Happy Trails!

Awesome ride!!!!

Today we had a half day of school (exams )......me and 4 other buddies went out from Newberry up to Wolf Inn and then over to Pine Stump (if anyone knows where that is). From there we took a different trail back and went into a camp that we have just south of Pine Stump a ways.....wow, i broke trail up through there and there is a TON of snow (at least 2 feet of fresh powder). We were up there last Friday, 1/10, and you couldn't even see our tracks!! Then from there we road some county roads back to the Newberry trail and then came back into town. The trails were in GREAT shape up until you start getting closer into town. The farther you go north, the more snow you run into, and the better trails you'll be ridin
