license? that sucks.
in petersburg you just have to own a sled to use it.
EVERYBODY rides in the roads, and there are usually two or three busts a year, but that is only because people are being stupid and dangerous.
I myself have been caught by a cop three times this year, but since i wasn't breaking any speed or reckless driving laws, he didn't care.
I think that your son or whatever will be fine as long as he's not stupid about it.

i cant imagine the cops being that much of a prick that they would actually fine your son for crossing a road, i mean if the trail crosses the road, you dont have much choice, i cant see it being a problem

Here is the skinny on under 16 or no DL on Ontario
If the operator is under 16 or does not posess a valid ontario drivers licence of any class (yes a motercycle lice is valid) the operator must posess a snowmobile operators lic. This lic can be obtained at the age 12. Up until the operator reaches the age of 16 he or she cannot cross any roadway, nor can they "walk" the snowmobile across the road.
The legislation goes on some more about it but that is the condensed version.
Around here the police will call a tow truck and have the sled impounded and then have a nice talk with your parents and my give you a ticket.
Here is an interesting fact about snowmobile operators licence, you can be charged with any infraction that pertains to the higway traffic act, snowmobile act, or trespass to property act and this will stick with you the rest of your life.
If you are wondering how I know this, I am an instructor that teaches the course and also a trail patrol member as well as a former STOP officer.

OMG. that is so ridiculous. I,m a L.E.O. and I have people riding sleds all over. As far as i,m concerned if you are not being an @sshole then no harm, no foul. In MI you can cross roads, dont need a drivers license to ride, need DNR class if under 16 but you are usually with a responsible adult. Absolutely ridiculous that you can't ride across a road. I know Ontario trails can go a long ways w/out crossing roads but in MI you cross them all the time.

I'm 15 in MI and I've never had a problem crossing roads. I've been stopped a few times, but they just asked for my registration, snowmobile license, and checked my stickers. Never been sound checked, but its bound to happen with the new crankshop exhaust

If he's got a snowmobile license then he is fine by himself, if he's with somebody, then he doesn't need the license

in my little town. it is a sledding town. everybody here has a sled. you can ride them on any street and any place. you can ride them right down the main street, pull over and park go into a restaurant and have some lunch go back out and ride away. i love it here! no one has a problem with any mods on your sled because everyone here does it! and where i live you only need a g1 or sledders license.

Just dont get caught. I live in small rural town by sudbury On. and i had my sled liscence since i was 12 and started crossing roads at the age of 14. I just never ride in front of the cop shop or cross hwy 17. I was never caught and i am now 17. Before i got my g1 every snow day i was on the roads going faster than speed limits and going to my grandparent( around 25km) and no one bothered me. The cops just dont care. I had my parents sled stolen and the cops did not even give a sh*t i had to walk about 1/2 km to the cop shop and writte out the roport my self. I was sixten at the time. Like come on

Just as a point of interest.
Your snowmobile Lic is valid at any age as long as you don't have ANY other class of Lic.

In Vermont under 12 can ride with 18 years olds with out a course, but can't cross roads. If you're 12 to 18 you can ride alone but need an 18 year old present to cross roads (but you yourself can take it across). So yes 15 year olds can cross but with limitations.

I'm 15... We had the cops called on us last year for riding along the sides of roads. Some old guy didn't like it. (I'm in WI by the way) They said as long as we aren't stupid it's fine. Just goin along at 5-10 mph should be fine. Then the cop left us to go about our snowmobile ways lol

Yeah i'm 16 and i'm from wisconsin too. I've never even been stopped. here you don't have to have your G1 to cross roads. just a snowmobile lisence. easy enough. I swear i could have slept through the entire class and gotten a passing grade.
the other thing to think about is this, we'll use the county i live in, Winnebago as an example. I'm pretty sure Winnebago County only has 2 DNR field officers. I know for sure that outagamie only has 2. so that leaves the local police force to pull over sledders, and they obviously can't follow you around on the trails anyways. so the only time you might get stopped is crossing a road. except that most all the trails are out in the country where the cops don't even care anyway...
