the lake effect snow belts of the UP are covered in 2' or more of snow...especially from last weeks snowfall. the trails are "closed",and have been since march 31st. however, i have heard that trail 7 and or 8 have been groomed in and around munising. private property is off limits, and has been since april 1st.

check out this pic from munising:

and this from the keweenaw:

check here for trail reports...

actually...i stand corrected

"The National Weather Service in Negaunee Township to the west of Marquette reported 48.5". The "Phoenix Farms" Coop Observer just up the road from be about 8 miles reported 57" of snow and the observer in Painesdale came in with 64.5" (johndee.com)

Here is a pic from john's ride this past weekend

IMO, yes it would be worth the trip...HOWEVER, back country trails is the way to go right now. with the trails not being groomed, 4' of snow turns into 2' of whoops in a matter of hours.

^ no, at the time of the previous post, there were only 2 trails being groomed in the central UP. that does not include the ungroomed trails that were open, and other trails in western/eastern UP. id assume w/ all the snow they had all the trails on public and state land were open. the majority of the trails in and around Munising are in the Hiawatha National Forrest, rail road grades, and logging roads. Very few go through private property.

the two shots of Munising and the Kewennaw are links to live web cams. Unfortunately you're looking at current weather conditions. at the time of the huge snow storm the camers displayed a TON of snow.

however, the johndee picture is a snapshot of the conditions when they were riding after the storm.

currently, there is no snow, and the ATV riders have been enjoying the trail system.

getting back to your comment, any time in the winter, imo its always worth it to drive to da UP for riding. i travel 6 hrs one way to get to Munising to ride, and have no regrets.
