Long Ride Planning

Well, all this talk about long rides has me wondering...

I have an 82 Yamaha SS440. It runs like a clock. Just rebuilt a lot on it and added a bunch of accessories.(i work in a machine shop)sort of) I want to plan a long trip. maybe a long weekend 3,4,or 5 days. not sure yet.
How confident could I be with my sled? I dont think it will break down. It's a runner. My brother rides a 97 zrt 700 and well he wont have a problem.

Is there anyone out there who rides or rides with people on vintage/older sleds?

being sure of you sled is a good start, but rideing with newer machines is.. or can be brutal! the suspension or LACK of slows you down.hows your back? I ride with some vintage guys (there sleds too)it just makes for some slower rides. no 200mi+ days. If your up to HAVE AT IT! just being on the trail is worth it! im planning a trip from the bethel/newry Me. area to fort kent Me. as soon as we have the snow to make it a reality.(it never happend last year)

Only you know your sled. I'd say some of the older ones are as (or more) reliable than new ones. I have an '80 Jag that I've taken on relatively long trips, with no problems. I've taken my newer ones and had bolts fall out of the suspension. It's all a matter of condition and maintenance.

my dad went on a 650 mile trip on his 1979 el tigre back when it was new. As long as the sled is in good condition and you have the route planned well, you should be alright. plus, if the snow conditions are good it doesn't matter what kind of suspension you have. If they get rough, you may be in for a treat.

I had a guy ride a 79 exciter from paradise MI to hurley wisc. this was in about 93-94 the rest of us had new sleds. he sold the sled and bought a bus ticket home in hurley. you can ride for 4-5 days just dont get 300 plus miles away from your truck

one other thing on a long ride dont forget the plastic. Ive seen guys lose all their money in the casino on the second day of aweek long trip. Ive also bought a sled onthe trail when mine was unrepairable and a good rope. had to tow one sled from west yellowstone to togwotee, about 200 miles that was a long tow
