Removing studs

I just purchased a 2001 Polaris 800LE, which has 192 studs. I prefer that there is now studs, but alas it is what it is.

Question: Since I sled in the Northern WI and UP area, will removing the studs cause any problems to the track? Can I reduce the amount of studs without damaging the track?

Your thoughts,

My thoughts......
1) No need to post the same question twice; choose one forum only, we'll find it every time...gauranteed!!

2) You didn't state my you want to remove the studs. I would suggest keeping them, especially w/an 800cc sled. You haven't even ridden it yet! Drive it first before you form an opinion!

3) Welcome to SF.com!! You'll like it here once you get the hang of it!!

You can remove them if you want and it wont damage the track. I know that Id definetly be taking them out. 192 studs are great for lake racing, but I wouldnt want that many for trail riding. You will need to run at least 8" of carbide just to make the sled turn and by the end of the day, the effort required just to steer that sled is going to wear you out unless you are a pretty muscular person.
I wouldnt go with any more than 144 studs in that sled.
I only have 96 studs in my 600 and it hooks up just fine. I actually prefer fewer studs because the keeps the sled more free or "loose" in the corners.

I agree for trail riding.

If you do pull them, get the lengths of them and I may be willing to purchase them from you!

I have 144 on my 600 because I do quite a bit of lake riding. It is great for the lakes, but tires me out a bit on the trail. If you aren't going to much on the lakes, I would run 96 for the trails. 192 is definitely a bit radical.

I got an 02 xc800sp and I run 192 and 03 Prox800 and it also got 192 and we have 02 xc500sp and it got 144 and a 97 Indy trail with 96 and it and I run up in the U.P and in WI and we don't run lake unless we have to I will never run with out studs ever again I was going up a hill with no studs on my 02 xc800sp and I loss traction and my daughter was on a 97 Indy 500 behind me that I brought used and it had 48 studs in it and I came down backwards and we almost hit a tree if it was for a friend that pulled her off in to deep snow we both would of got hurt bad and after that I went out and got studs and my daughters sled that had 48 studs in it got removed and I put 96 studs in it and they all are in a v pattern because that same day all my friends was studded and they all had no trouble going up that hill and there is a lot of people still get stuck up on that hill and we all just go right on up with the stuck sleds sitting there and then we put 2 sled on them to pull them up it and Octane is right on you need 8" of carbide we do sometimes run with 6" inch if I don't have 8" around the xc500sp we run 4" - 6" carbides on it and the Indy Trail we run 4" inches on it I am a snowmobile safety instructor and I recommend to my class it is a good thing to run with stud they do help you to stop better and they do help for pulling out better but they will rip up a trailer floor if you don't have ski guides and mats down

Dude, there's a key on your keyboard that's 2 keys to the left of your right shift key. Using it would make your post MUCH easier to read.

As for studs, I recently purchased an 06 MXZ 500SS. It's the first sled I've ever owned with studs. I think there's 96 of them, but I'm not really sure, haven't counted, but that seems like the right number. I've never had a problem losing traction on any of my previous sleds, because I always kept a decent track on them, usually a 1" take off brand new from my dealer.

My brothers got an '06 mxz x 800 and the guy he bought it from put 200 studs in it, while it might be overkill, my brother says he has yet to find a negative thing about it, other than the fact that it is unnecessary.

Unless he's running lakes 100% of the time, 200 is WAY overkill. He's just gonna tear up the trails with that many studs.

I just recently studed my track with 96 carbide tip stud. They stick out just about an 1/8 to a 1/4 inch. In the yard, it grabs a little better, i dont know about trails yet, but i am sure it will help. I couldnt do anything for traction on the ice or the trails when i had to tow my buddies sled back.
