I'm a new snowmobiler in Michigan. I know you need registration and trail sticker, but do you need insurance also?

If you have a lean on the snowmobile, the bank will require you to have insurance on the machine. If you ride an old beater like me, then its your choice to have insurance. If it gets stolen or damaged, your out the machine.

Yea, not required but i agree with the loan part but if you got the old beater(which is also fun) then y bother?

Because, if you have insurance on it, and it gets totaled out, the insurance company may give you more than what you paid for it. Thus you can go out and get a better snowmobile. I wouldn't recommend doing it, but its possible scenario. Also, another great thought i just had is: If your on the trail and you hit somebody and you don't have insurance, do you have to pay there medical bills, or would the insurance company that you have your sled through take care of that? I assume that since Michigan is a no-fault insurance state it applies to all vehicles?

I dont condone going out and totalling your machine just to find out that im probably completely wrong.

Required or not, it's just smart to have it to CYOA. In case of any trouble in this sue happy time in which we live.

When my agent took pics of my house for homeowners ins, one of the sleds was in the pic. The insurance company required me to include the sleds under the liability part of my homeowners. Only added a few dollars a year and the peace of mind is worth it. Doesn't cover the sleds, just the damage I might do with them ( hopefully not do wtih them!!)
