I'm going to be in PA for the weekend, including Monday. I think the snow is going to be gone up north anyway. A couple days in the 50's is what we're getting, then back into the teens for Saturday-Monday. What a sucky winter!!!

The Wyoming County trail system was officially closed since Monday. I'm glad we got a decent ride in Saturday - but even then the snow was pretty skinny on some of the trails.

After two days of near 50 degrees, 80% of the snowcover is gone here in southeastern Wyoming County - just some drifts and piles here and there. We haven't even had a solid week of riding down here in Snowmobile Country, Western NY. And Letchworth State Park's huge system of trails hasn't been open even one single solitary day since muzzle-loading season ended 12/21. That's almost two months of the winter season!

The cold is good - it will freeze the ground, which didn't happen before last week's storm, and unfrozen ground settled/melted a lot of that snow. However, despite the cold, there's no real snow in the forecast for the next week - just "30 % chance of snow showers" type of thing.

We need to get a base, and then build on it, for good snowmobiling. That just hasn't happened since before Christmas.

Angry must read

THE SENATE
STATE OF NEW YORK

JAMES L. SEWARD
SENATOR, 51 ST DISTRICT
February 16, 2006
WWW.SENATORJIMSEWARD.COM Email; SEWARD@SENATE.STATE.NY.US
Mr. R. J. Gleason
Groton, New York 13073
Dear Mr. Gleason:
Thank you for contacting my office concerning the governor's proposed raid on the snowmobile trail fund. The governor's 2006-07 state budget calls for grabbing $2.5 million in snowmobile trail funds and sweeping it into the state's general fund. Under the governor's plan, money available for trails would drop from $3.4 million to $1.9 million.

I agree with your position completely. I didn't vote for a trail fund in order to see it raided by the state and diverted to their purposes. That breaks faith with the snowmobilers who pay registration fees that they have requested, and accepted, in order to have local trails. The governor is completely and totally wrong on this issue and I will fight it every step of the way.

The proposal also gives state policy makers a black eye. People will wonder whether the state can ever keep its word to the people we serve.

We have a tough row to hoe this year. New York is facing some difficult challenges that require strong leadership and genuine, bipartisan solutions. Property taxes are too high; our upstate economy is suffering; and our talented young people are leaving the state for jobs elsewhere. My priority this year is simple, protecting the hardworking, overburdened New York taxpayer as we adopt a new "3 Rs" : Revitalize our economy, renew our commitment to tax cuts, and recommit to helping our ,students achieve more in the classroom.

What I'm working for: an on-time budget without a penny in new taxes.

As you know, the legislature's role in making changes to a governor's budget has been severely curtailed by the court of appeals. However, I will do what I can to protect the integrity of the snowmobile trail fund.

Again, thank you for contacting me. Please do not hesitate to do so again if I can be of additional assistance.

With best wishes, I remain

Thanks for posting this reply RJ.... it is definitely discouraging when those elected to serve us in the great state of NY realize they truly do not have the means of supporting the people who elected them. New laws are being put in place which will force sled owners to either pay membership dues to a club or pay more than double the standard registration fees for each sled next year, but now it does seem all this extra 'snowmobile' money will just be absorbed by the state. Another example of just how poorly this state is run and one more black hole sucking the life out of those who would like to remain here.......

Check the must read post on general sled chat. there is a link to find your senator there and you should contact him to voice your displeasure on this matter.

Well, it's snowing now and we may actually get enough to ride on from this by tomorrow morning.

Powley Rd - Piseco

Went over to Powley Rd and Piseco yesterday (Sat), snowing like a bastage all day, absolute zero visibility on the lake. On the positive, they got at least 8 - 10 throughout the day yesterday and today looks like a beauty day up there so we are heading back out now, for anyone wondering how it is over there.....

Local trails will most likely be closed by wed afternoon as it is going to be warming up again. there are still ridable trails in the area but many bare spots and little base, some have been groomed.

Stratford/Piseco area saw the trails pretty thinned down by Sunday evening. Some of the seasonal roads still held up great and provided some awesome riding though. Still, with temps in the 50's from tomorrow thru Sunday, and a chance of freezing rain on Thurs, I am afraid our season may be over.... I am sure they will scratch out a few more weeks on the hill, but after enjoying such good conditions the past three weekends in the Salisbury area I don't have any interest in going back up to the hill....
