Just be warned that the water hole I posted a pic of was about 3 feet deep. One guy launched his brand new Yammi into a tree coming, out of one of the water holes. Broke off his kill switch, and took out a few lower branches in the woods. We stopped to help... took a half hour to get it running again.
Thanks for the info. I would prefer to avoid that water hole - don't know how I (or anyone) could go through it without getting sopping wet or drowning out my sled's motor. Was that right at the restaurant, or was that further up the trail towards Tug Hill?

Is there an intersecting road further up the trails where we could park and completely avoid the water? Thanks in advance for the help.

The water holes were on the way to Redfield from the Parish parking area. That's where we stopped at the top of the (attached) map. The other water hole was at the bottom of the map. The yellow line is our track. Note all the blue lines in the map... those are creeks/rivers. The trail crosses a LOT of them.

You may be better off going up north farther, and dropping at Pulaski. If you jump off of 81 at Pulaski and ask at a gas station, they should be able to point you to a parking area.

Cleve - Don't waste the trip unless we get some more snow.

I drove up there today, wanting to get a few hours of riding in... The trails were dirt, with a tiny bit of snow on them. I tried Parish, and even went a little further north to Pulaski.

No go! Didn't even take them off the tailer. The conditions have deteriorated completely, to the point where it's simply not rideable at all. If it were even marginal, I would have stayed! Instead, I took a 4 hour trip for nothing.

70/30 bare ground to snow here in Portageville - mid 30's and drizzly rain! Trails haven't been ridable in over ten days!!! It *may* get colder this weekend, but we would need substantial snowfall in addition to those cold temps to get things going in Wyoming County.

Hey, how close are you to Varysburg? I rode out of there last Feb.. The trails were sweet!!! I have another trip out that way planned for the last weekend in Feb.! I stay up at Camp Hickory Hill. It's right on the powerline trail.

Varysburg is only about 20 miles Northwest of here. I know the trails run from here to there - probably a 40-50 minute ride from my door when the conditions are right.

Once we get some snow, I'll let ya know!!!

Thanks! Those were nice trails out your way. We rode from the camp to Darien State Park one of the days. It was a pretty short trip, except we stopped to help a guy get his groomer un-stuck... so that added a half hour to the trip.

and I'm guessing that's long gone by now too! Now it's eating into the patchy remanents of snow left over from November and early December. It's supposed to be in the 50 tomorrow here - 50 on Thursday, and mid 50's on Friday with 'hazy sunshine' Sheesh!

We won't see seasonal temps until the weekend - 40% chance of snow - doesn't sound very promising. the 7 day forecast is upper 30's next Tuesday, Jan 17 and rain!

Nope, we got maybe 3/4 " yesterday - it's extremely cold outside - probably will go down to close to zero tonight, but there was no snow to begin with - so we're left with maybe 1/2" today.

Supposed to be in the 40's by Tuesday. So much for the return of winter.

Tug Hill got 9.5 inches, but there's no base. I heard Old Forge is thin. Try www.absolutesnowmobile.com for pretty reliable reports.

It seems almost incomprehensible that there would be any rideability issues on Tug Hill in the latter half of JANUARY!!???

Didn't poor Old Forge have a bad year last year too, in terms of snow? Two bad years in a row could really hurt the economy up there.

I am hoping the Redfield area gets some snow between now and Sunday morning, anyone in that area have any idea what it might be like over there? It would be about a two hour drive for me but i can't go another weekend without riding!

Well, obviously won't be heading out now.... went outside this morning, 51 degrees and the grass is litterally green and growing..... no point heading north as it looks to be staying in the mid to upper 30's even there.... what a lousy winter

Don't give up yet. Last year we didn't have any snow on the ground until the 3rd week in January!!! Remember? We still had a pretty good riding season despite the late start. The weather dudes are saying the last week in Jan will cool down and stay there. Then, Feb is supposed to bring winter back in our region. Be patient... it will get there.

Meantime, you could be out shopping for a used sled from all the people who have already given up on this season.

Man you are not kidding there, I drove about 6 miles today and saw 4 very nice sleds with For Sale signs on them.... I really hope you're right, we waited 10 years and got in one great ride before the snow went, just enuff to make us want more! With any luck, we will get a good February and maybe even sneak a week out of March here, IF it gets cold this week and the snow returns quickly.
