I ask because there is the possibility that one of the shock mount between the rails has flipped over and the bolt is rubbing against the drive lugs.

If you look up your sled, you can see how it is supposed to go together.
The lower end of the shock is supposed to be mounted with the bracket above the shaft, not below it.
If it is below the shaft, when the suspension compresses, it can hit the lugs or even the track. Is there any signs of wear in the center of the track?

My only other thought is that maybe the chain is stretched/worn and is slipping on the sprockets.

I would definately check the chain case. My wife's sled was making that kind of rough sound and the chain was super loose. I tightened it up and no more noise, also my suspension was missing a bolt so the track was loose. I replaced the bolt's and tightened up the track and I have not had a problem yet.

My sled was making a heavy grinding sound about a month ago.
I figured I could limp it home, wrong answer!!!
I piled up my chain case right in the middle of the river in about
2 feet of overflow!! All I had to do was stop and find a wrench
and tighten up my chain but I got lazy and now I have to buy
new sprocket's and chain.

well good news.... bad news.... good news is that its not the chain making that noise, or anything else in the drivetrain. bad news still dont know where is it coming from...... possibly the starter motor? it makes wierd noises when it use the starter to start it. could this be it?

well it is really hard to tell, first you say it is making noise when you accelerate
and now it is making noise when you start it? Which is it? Both? The starter should not make any noise when you accelerate, if so you have some serious problem's. Did you take the cover off the chain case and look at the chain?
How did it look? any sign's of wear? missing teeth or rounded teeth?
Have a look at your driver's as well they may be worn and could be slipping in the track, also check the track when looking under there. could need more tightening or might even need to be replaced.

the chain and the gears and everything are AOK. and what i meant about starting it. the starter motor has something that is worn out on it. i cant rememeber what its called, but once i let go of the key it makes a squealing noise. like a tire squealing. we are just going to be taking out the electric start. so we will see once that is gone
