POV Vid and advice

I tried a little point of view video by basically ziptying my cheap digital camera to the handle bars and cruising around the trails.

I got the camera aimed pretty well, and I like the way the view changes when I turn the bars. But, the camera is picking up some vibrations - you can really see the effect when I go between the power line poles. The poles look like they're made of rubber.

Any advice on how to solidly mount the camera with some vibration dampening?

Here's the vid, it's much better if you click on "Watch in high Quality".

im not sure about the damping, maybe some rubber around the zipties?? but its actually a pretty decent vid for just ziptying a camera on!

Actually the worst vibration showed when you were stopped/idling.
The other effect was the lens effect of the wind screen curve.

If you could mount it at the center of the bars, that would eliminate most of that curvature effect.

Yeah, the windshield line did bother me as well. The reason I mounted it where I did was that the handle bar pad is parralell with the ground there. The pad is more angled at the center of the handle bars, and I think it'd cause the camera to rotate up or down.

I did want it behind the windshield to eliminate most of the wind noise - I'd rather hear the engine.

I did notice the vibration at idle - it also seems to distort the picture at 75-80 MPH (it's more obvious on the original movie before it got compressed by utube)

Thanks, JKSled. I guess it didn't turn out too bad. I've got some pretty stiff foam rubber that I may be able to put between the camera and handlebars - it's worth a shot. Too bad the warm weather had the trails closed.

hey sorry such a late response...you should look into getting a POV camera...I havea VholdR and use it every chance I get. they are about $279 but worth it if you ride all the time... i wouldnt mess up a digital camera cause in the long run you will end up buying a new one and then a POV camera...pretty good vid though

MntnDewLvr123, not really looking to make a habit of this. Just thought I'd give it a try. I'm not worried about messing up my digital camera, it's already messed up. It started life as an Aiptek Camera. But I nearly killed it by dropping it in Lake Wisconsin - a story for a different time. I was able to take it apart and dry it out, but the flip out LCD screen was fried and the LiPo battery pack refused to take a charge any longer. So, I stripped the camera down and removed everything that didn't work. I was left with a 3oz electronic board, lens and parts of the shell. The cool thing is that the camera ran on a 3.7V pack. I found that I could wire a 3 cell AA pack to make it work again. I have a decent digital camera - if this one gets destroyed I won't be too upset.

guitarfreak, I ride a '91 El Tigre. It's the only one like it I've seen on the trails. So, if you've seen one, it was probably me on the back. I usually ride between Greenville and Stephensville. I try to get out on the river when the ice is thick enough. What do you ride?

just a sidenote since we're talkin about POV cams and the Vholdr... VholdR has a lot of cool angles and POVs for all kinds of extreme sports. a good place to kill time or get ideas for your own vids
