Carb rebuild

Every year, I have a hard time getting my 98 MXZs to start. One year, I took them and had someone rebuild/clean the carbs. (Mikuni)

I just took the carns off and I'm going to clean them myself. The question I have is, Is there anything special I need to know. Or, should I just put them back together after cleaning them? Are there any steps I can find online to help?

Welcome! Check this out!

Carb Cleaning

Also go up to search at the top of the page and put carb cleaning in there.

watch out for small screws
and! look in a manual for the low speed and high speed idle mixture screws
id invest in some snap on carb cleaner
its high pressure and shoots all crud in ur carbs out
ive taken my makuni's apart multiple times

just take the bowl off and clean what you see
dont go any futher its unnecessary

I'd go further than just taking the bowl off. Half of the problem with sleds that won't idle is the low speed jet, which is a screw thing in the bowl area, as well as crud which gets caught in the inlet needle. Take it all apart and do it right the first time you're there.

small engine guy:

when you take the bowl off all that is left to come off is the idle screws, which is what you said.
sometimes you can get to all those orifaces when the bowl is off
but i agree removing the high and low idle screws is a good idea

AND NOTE: make sure you know how many turns to put them out when you reinstall

I'm not talking the screws, I meant the jets, which are inside the small orifices near the inlet needle when you take the bowl off. You need a small flathead screwdriver to get it out.

also on the 98's you have the push primer and they are really sensitive to how much you prime them...i just push it till the last pump is firm and feels full and thats it...too much and too little takes a lot of effort..they tend to flood easy so be ware of that
