I just picked up a 96 MXZ 670 and when I got it the idle was way up at 3000 rpm.
Once I took it home I adjusted the rpm back to specs to find that the primary clutch is making weird banging sounds that go away once you rev it up. hence the high rpm setting by the seller
Initially I thought it might be the PTO bearings but I put my stethoscope to the engine and they are quiet.
I also noticed that the outer sheave has a bit of play in it It could be a worn bushing, It also makes a strange sound when the engine is killed.
It goes like stink and the clutch seems to be shifting fine but I have a 4 hour round trip coming up this weekend with our snowmobile group and I'm wondering if I should chance it or will this thing bomb on me?

not really a fan of having a clutch self destruct at high RPM if you know what I mean.
What do you guys think??
