New to Sleds. A few Ski Doo Questions

Hello Everyone,

I am new to the sport, basically brand new as I just got my first sleds.

I have always wanted a snowmobile but could never afford one being in college and then saving for a house. Well I got the house so it was time to get a sled. Problem was I had very little money so a new sled was out of the picture. Someone gave me a 1974 Ski Doo TNT 440 FC sled last summer. I took it out a few times this winter and each time I took it out I ended up having something to fix. The last time I took it out the fan shroud had a melt down and caused all kinds of problems. So I went from having fun on an old bomber to having a broken sled in the garage. I ordered the parts to fix the bomber, but had an eye out for something a little more dependable.

A friend had a 1996 Touring E that he wanted to get rid of. He would give it to me for $600. I knew it had some issues but figured that sice he would take payments on the $600 and that it was pretty cheap I would be a fool to turn it down.

I picked it up last week and started to take note of the issues the sled had. Broken windshield, no big deal, small rip in seat, no big deal... It starts right up, great.

It is however missing the exhaust pipe. My friend (who isn't the smartest guy on earth) threw away the original exhaust pipe because it had a few holes in it.
and planned on getting a new one. Well when he found out a new one would cost $500 he decided to rig one up himself. So he fabricated an exhaust system out of a car muffler and some flex pipe. The thing sounds like a fart can Honda Civic. He said he only ran it like this for an hour, it sat in his shed prior. I am really hesitant to run it like this for fear that this will hurt the sled or at the least rob it of power (It needs all the power it can get being a 380). Will this bush league exhaust hurt the sled? I am looking for a used pipe right now. If I can't find one I will buy a new one after I pay for the sled first off.

The other issue is that it doesn't appear to have the stock ski's or front suspension. My friend told me that the owner prior to him had replaced the skis and shocks with those of another Ski Doo (Formula?). The suspention/shocks look to be good aftermarket coilovers so this doesn't concern me much. The ski's look narrow however and are not (I don't beleive) touring skis. The sled likes to tip on hard turns. Will formula skis fit this model and would this cause the easy tipping?

Finally, what is the chasis for this sled called. Is it the "S" chasis.

Thank you for your responses/feedback

a homemade exhaust system is not a good idea for a two-stroke, look around and i'm sure you'll find a price cheaper than $500

Check eBay, etc. for a replacement exhaust for it. The one you have on it now could damage the engine...

Ya I agree... Plus you don't want your sled sounding like a honda.

About the breaking down, don't sweat it man. You have to be prepared for that with sleds.. I' ve had boats, bikes, sleds, ATVs.. They ALWAYS break down. It's party of the hobby to fix them yourself. Well... Unless you have a truckload of money in your back yard.
I imagine that's what rich folk do!
