Ya know, I have a 98 MXZ 440 that did that. Although this may not be your solution, mine was focused around the choke. My left carb's choke was sticking in the ON position because it was corroded. When I unscrewed where the choke pluger goes into the carb and lifted the plunger out, I saw it was funky and filled with crud. I tried cleaning it as best I could. I eventually bought a choke rebuild kit from Dennis Kirk online. It had that new plunger.
Today, it starts somewhat OK but not as nicely as my 670. It also has that crappy acceleration you mentioned where you have to feather the throttle to get it to rev up. This may be classified as a low-end bog, I donno. I'll keep reading this post to see if anyone has a more exact answer.
My clutch kicks it at around 4k and top speed for my 440 is only 55 or so. I'm a big dude and with my fast ass on the sled adding 225lbs it's about all I can get out of it! I keep the 440 as a back up or for friends.
Sorry if I can't give you more info.
