Yeah, it depends on the gearing on the two sleds, weight of the riders, running condition, temp, etc. My '79 John Deere with the 439cc(? I think that's the size) engine could do 85 mph when I was around 12 years old (125 pounds). Although you have to give room for speedo error, I guess alot of the older sleds' speedo's aren't exactly accurate... Run him and find out! Also, my sled wasn't very stable with the skiis being very close together and a somewhat high center of gravity. I'm not sure about the Doos of that era, but if that's the case be careful... mine was tipsy! Good luck and keep the rubber side down!!!
