I got a 1983ish ski-doo blizzard 5500, with a 503 fan, its the dual rear coil overs. I am getting excited because i am almost finished rebuiliding it, how fast do u think it will go? and my friend has a 340 blizzard 1980, liquid and he thinks he can beat me, does anyone have any top speeds on either of these?

Depends how it's geared, but I'd guess around 70- 75.

is that for the 500 or the 340? my friend tries to tell me that the 340 can do 80 miles an hour

That's probably 80km. Yours will do around 75MPH.

Yeah, it depends on the gearing on the two sleds, weight of the riders, running condition, temp, etc. My '79 John Deere with the 439cc(? I think that's the size) engine could do 85 mph when I was around 12 years old (125 pounds). Although you have to give room for speedo error, I guess alot of the older sleds' speedo's aren't exactly accurate... Run him and find out! Also, my sled wasn't very stable with the skiis being very close together and a somewhat high center of gravity. I'm not sure about the Doos of that era, but if that's the case be careful... mine was tipsy! Good luck and keep the rubber side down!!!

The thing to remember is that 60mph on an early 80's sled feels like 100 or so on a new sled. I feel safer at WOT on my 1999 670 than I did on my 1972 El Tigre 400,even at nearly twice the speed. Maybe I should say more in control, not safer!

By all means if both are in equal states of tune and riders are of similar wieghts, the 340cc L/C 6500/7500 should beat the fan cooled 498cc "503" motored 5500 since the numbers denoted ranking/power/speed in the Blizzard line. For a 5500 about 55HP and 55MPH theoretical top speed, 6500 and 7500's were rated for 65HP/75HP and 65MPH/75MPH respectively and the big daddy 9500's were stated as being 95HP and 95MPH. But only a true face off or a radar gun will tell the final story, so know this old sled speedos are inaccurate and only a rough guide of your speed.
